The author, 4th Baronet and 1st Baron Avebury (1834-1913) was accepted into his father's bank, and became a partner at the age of 22. Active in politics, he served as Liberal Party Member of Parliament and is credited with carrying numerous parliamentary acts. He had an avid interest in the study of bees, on which he wrote at least one book. As a student of archaeology, he is credited with coining the terms, paleolithic and neolithic, as described in his very popular textbook, Pre-historic Times. This book is a series of short meditations on topics of importance to everyone - The Duty of Happiness, The Blessing of Friends, and The Value of Time, for example. Previous owner's name.
