SOS the Rope

N.Y.: Pyramid X-1890, 1968. This book is in very nice, tight shape. There are no cracks in the glue and the spine has no reader's creases. There is a printers crease along the bottom third of the spine. No marks, no writing on the interior pages, no store stamps and no price tags. That being said...here is what is wrong with it. there is chipping along the spine edge of the front and back covers. There is a chip on the top spine corner of the front cover. There is minor chipping along the outside edges of the book. There is an "almost" fold/crease about a half an inch long on the top edge of the front cover and both front outer corners have small creases and slight rounding. The bottom front and back covers both have tiny little tears but the pieces are still there. The back cover has a chip on the spine edge of the book and a very tiny rip starting to the top edge of the cover. The pages are, of course, starting to brown with age. Frankly I have made the book sound worse than it is but I would rather you know what it looks like and be pleasantly surprised than disappointed.. First Paperback Edition. Mars Attacks Bk. 1 : Martian Deathtrap (Mars Attacks Ser., Vol. 1)
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Ballantine Books, 1996. From the back cover: "the invasion was quick and merciless. Nothing on earth could counter the superior technology of the inter-planetary aggressors. Their first strike left worldwide defences utterly useless..."From the jacket: "In 1962, at the height of the cold war, the Brooklyn based Topps Chewing Gum Company released a set of trading cards that combined a classic, H.G. Wells - style alien invasion with the graphic atrocities of war. The result was the legendary Mars Attacks cards, and the reaction was swift: national uproar. Deemed too gruesome for innocent young minds, the cards were quickly supressed. But even as they disappeared from the market, their cult status grew...finally in 1995, Topps rereleased the set, adding new - and equally gruesome - cards. The invasion egan anew, leading to comic books, novels, a major motion picture deal ..."This book still has the Punch-out collector cards intact.. Stated First. Hard Cover. Canada: Gold Medal, 1951. If you are a collector this is only good as a "fill in" copy until you get a high grade copy. It is very fragile and every time you open the book the glue splits a little more. All the pages are still attached but if you intend to read the book I would suspect that you will be detaching the pages as you go. The cover is the most attractive thing about the book and there are plenty of chips along the edges and reading creases near the spine. The edges show the kind of dirt you get from sitting in the back of the shelf in the basement. There is also the previous owner's signature in the front of the book. BUT a neat book to own.. Orange, California, U.S.A.: Image Comics, 1996. This is a limited editon signed on a tip-in-page, exclusive to this edition! It is a pretty hard to find item these days, and is a very nice addition to Jim Lees's (Batman, Superman) fans' collections! The book is in perfect shape. It is a decorative cloth bound hardcover. The title is embossed in red and is just stunning. The Dust jacket, however, has a slice in it which extends about 2" straight across just above Grifter's head. It seems to have been caused by a box cutter. It is hard to see so it does not affect the appearance, but is important to the contition. This would have been an exclusive when it was released, and has a printed price on the jacket of $75.00.. Signed by Author. Stated First Edition/ First Print. Hard Cover. Fine/Good. Toronto, Canada: Collins White Circle 264, 1946. At first glance it looks pretty nice, but it has some major flaws.. Structurally it's fine- The binding is tight, book is square, and guts are browned but supple. Some dog-earing and creasing, but nothing serious Unfortunately, there are some white blotch-stains at the bottom of the front cover, and the spine, which is otherwise only lightly creased, is frayed at the bottom and the binding is starting to show through. No better than a Good+, but a tough enough find in any shape. Collins White Circle was a Canadian publisher which released more than 500 titles between the late 40's & early 50's. Contemporaries of Harlequin, another Canadian company, they're very similar in appearance to Harlequins, and shared the same production quality, which is to say, poor. They used low quality pulp stock paper, and the guts were poorly held in place due to weak binding glue, making higher-grade copies difficult to come by.. First Thus. Mass Market Paperback. The Indigo Necklace Murders

N.Y.: Bantam, 1948. The condition is rough - The Perma-Gloss is still holding, but it's a bit grimy, and there's some water staining through the first half guts along the outside of the print edge. It doesn't seem to have affected the integrity of the book all that much, but it's there none the less. Spine is slightly cocked, but uncreased, some blunting to the corners & bumping to cover top right. It's still relatively supple, and nice color remains. Excellent cover by J.Karl. Pages 27-58 are slightly shorter than the rest of the book. This is a binding error and was not trimmed later. From the back cover: "In the old mansion in French New Orleans, Jean Abbott heard the small sound of the clicking latch, and discovered the terrors of whispering footsteps along the fretworked balcony outside her room. Alone and terrified, she found a ghostly white-robed body, dead on the moonlit flagstones in the courtyard. Then she knew that she was living under the same roof with a murderer.a killer who dealt in rare exotic poison, and who walked by night, softly, softly." This is Bantam book #312. First Thus. U.S.A.: Corinth Publications (nightstand books) , 1965. This copy was called a " Nightstand Book", number NB1731. It has a neat risque cover - as all of this series had. Nightstand weren't the only company putting out titles like these, but this whole style of paperback that emerged in the early-to-mid 60's were the successors to Beacon & similar publishers.. In the context of the times, these were borderline pornography. Definitely quaint when viewed from the modern perspective Super cheesy, sexy cover art!. Royal Family: A Pop-Up Book
Westminster, Maryland, U.S.A.: Random House Value Pub, 1984. No damage to the book or the pop-ups. There is, however, a small date written in ink on the first page. Great pop-up showing royal family at play and on tour with the small boys, kissing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on their wedding day, and at official events. Those were certainly happier days.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine./No Jacket as Published. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

October the First is Too Late

London: Heinemann, 1966. This book is in lovely shape. The book has been read and opens easily but it is not marked, written in, stamped or underlined. There is no one's name written inside and is very clean. <p> The dustjacket, on the other hand, shows wear. There is chipping on the top and bottom edges. There is a small rip on the top front edge of the dustjacket and the upper front corner as well as the bottom front corner, are worn right away. There also are what appears to be splatter marks from what looks to be coffee. There is a small amount of rubbing and scuffing. The price is NOT clipped. Generally the book looks nicer than I make it sound.. First Edition. Hard Cover. 5.5 x 8 Inches. more information

Garden City, U.S.A: Blue Ribbon, 1942. The book is slightly cocked and there is a warp to the bottom cover. The edges show wear and the pages are dusty on the edges.Especially the top edge. Some of the pages are rough cut. There is a price in pencil on the first page that could probably be erased. There is also a pencil note on the inside back cover. The back outside cover shows staining (probably a water stain) All this being said, the binding is solid and tight. The cartoons are neat and well done. The jacket is orange with 5 reviews of the book on the back. The back flap is a neat "wartime" blurb..."This book...like all books...is a symbol of the liberty and the freedom for which we fight. YOU...as a reader of books...can do your share in the desperate battle to protect those liberties. Buy WAR BONDS". There is extensive chipping and tears along the top and bottom edges of the jacket. The back of the jacket has a rip that is running from the bottom towards the top for about 2 inches.. Hard Cover. Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

Passion in the Dust

N.Y.: Red Circle , 1949. This is Red Circle book #6. Red Circle became Lion Books with number 8, reverted to Red Circle for #12 and 13, then back to Lion for the duration of the series run. This is Western themed, with a very nice "Good Girl" art cover. The big problem with this copy is that, although complete, the last quarter of the books' guts have separated from the binding. These pages are still holding together, and the rest of the book would qualify as a Good +. There is some rubbing and creasing, but looks nicely presentable. We are listing it due to it's relative scarcity, but it should be viewed as a filler copy only.. Mass Market Paperback. Good. more information

U.S.A.: Dell, 1947. This book has Super cover art, and a great Oriental-thememd Map Back. The condition, however, is not that great. The front cover is splitting away at the spine edge...almost to half way up the book. The spine is lightly cocked with a fair amount of publishers creasing. It is generally grimy. There is a red crayon star on the front cover. It is still complete, but nothing better than a Good...a filler copy. . Mass Market Paperback. Good. more information

Canada: Daw, 1979. This is a lovely, unread book. The spine is square and the whole book is in lovely shape. The only flaw is on the front cover. If you wiggle it around under the light you can see a "bubble" between the dragon's nose and his ear flap. But you really have to look for the flaw. The book is Daw #353. First Printing.
