Man & the Universe: An Islamic Perspective
Amman: Wakeel Books, 2002. It is now obvious that something has gone very wrong in the West, and that psychological and social alternatives have become pressing issues. In this timely book, Dr. Badawi reminds us that Islam has a historically verifiable track record for heating social chaos and individual tragedy. Sadly, the principles of Islam have all too often been suppressed by the deluge of educational materials, media and socio-economic strangulation from the West. Dr Badawi provides a powerful overview of the Islamic metaphysics and unearths its spiritual, social and ethnic values as well as a diagnosis of the modern man. This is an urgent piece of writing about what we human beings are and where we are. . ISBN: 9957230212. D/J in Protective Wrapper. Revised and Expanded Edition. Cloth. Studies in Modern Islamic Law and Jurisprudence
The Hague: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2001. This book is about Islamic law not merely as a doctrinal corpus, object of academic inquiry and analysis, but first and foremost, as a living reality in contemporary Muslim societies where it is enforced as a positive law of the state. The book shows 19th- and 20th-century Islamic law as a dynamic process casting its net into the 21st century, shaper of major constitutional and legal developments in the Arab and Muslim worlds already underway, and with drastic and far-reaching consequences for the future of these countries and their relations with other states. The modern process of positivization of Shari'a, that is its ongoing transformation into a law of the nation-state, poses a number of burning questions. What is the legal domain of the new Shari'a? What are its relations to the modern Western-structured judicial apparatus of Middle-Eastern states ? What portions of the historical substantive Islamic rulings are to take precedence in its formulation ? The introduction and nine chapters of this volume provide some answers to these questions. The book contains three studies on marriage and divorce, of which two deal with recent changes in Islamic marriage law in the 1990s in Egypt and Saudi Arabia; three studies on contract law in the new civil codes of Egypt, Iraq and Syria; one study on the ideological springs of Muhammad 'Abduh's visionary program for the reconstruction of shari'a; one on the place of Islamic law in the judicial doctrine and policy of the Egyptian state as expressed in the 1980s and 1990s rulings and decisions of Egypt's High Constitutional Court; and one study on Legal Capacity, showing Muslim jurists at grips with modern concerns about basic individual rights. It should prove useful to Middle-East area-specialists, family and women-studies, sociologists and legal scholars and practitioners, as well as to the general reader interested in the richness and variety of world legal systems. Logic in a Popular Form Essays on Popular Religion in Bengal
Calcutta: Seagull Books, 2002. Taking its title from Karl Marx's description of religion as 'the general theory of this world...[and] its logic in a popular form', this volume of essays explores the hidden logic behind the popular construction of certain myths, beliefs about godlings and spirits, and cross-religious cults, viewing them as popular inventions attempting to make sense of human existence in the face of an overwhelming and often hostile environment. These religious manifestations of popular logic are fluid, ever-changing, and always innovative. They represent an alternative stream running parallel to, and often challenging, the more strictly structured beliefs and practices of the Indian religious establishments, whether Hindu, Islamic or Christian. The essays in this book are an attempt to rediscover some of the important aspects of this multi-faceted phenomenon of popular religion in the context of nineteenth-century Bengal, including tracing the impact of urbanisation, colonialism, and nationalism. 233pp.Tail of spine dented ,slight marking to boards, corners bumped.. Approaching the Qur'an : The Early Revelations
Oregon: White Cloud Press, 2007. Professor Michael Sells has captured the complexity, power, and poetry of the early suras of the Qur'an, the sacred scripture of Islam. "Approaching the Qur'an" presents brilliant translations of the short, hymnic chapters, or suras, associated with the first revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. Most of these early revelations appear at the end of the written text and are commonly reached only by the most resolute reader of existing English translations. These suras contain some of the most powerful prophetic and revelatory passages in religious history. They offer the vision of a meaningful and just life that anchors the religion of one-fifth of the world's inhabitants. "Approaching the Qur'an" is enriched by the inclusion of a compact disc recording of Quranic reciters chanting several of the early suras, allowing readers an opportunity to hear the Qur'an in its original form. The book includes Sells' 'Introduction to the Qur'an', commentaries of the suras, a glossary of technical terms, and chapters discussing the sound nature and gender aspects of the Arabic text. 236pp.Complete with CD..
