7) A Pest in the Land : New World Epidemics in a Global Perspective
Alchon, Suzanne Austin

Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 2003. This study of disease among the native peoples of the New World before and after 1492 challenges many widely held notions about encounters between European and native peoples. Whereas many late twentieth century scholars blamed the catastrophic decline of post-conquest native populations on the introduction of previously unknown infections from the Old World, Alchon argues that the experiences of native peoples in the New World closely resembled those of other human populations. Exposure to lethal new infections resulted in rates of morbidity and mortality among native Americans comparable to those found among Old World populations. Why then did native American populations decline by 75 to 90 percent in the century following contact with Europeans? Why did these populations fail to recover, in contrast to those of Africa, Asia, and Europe? Alchon points to the practices of European colonialism. Warfare and slavery increased mortality, and forced migrations undermined social, political, and economic institutions. This timely study effectively overturns the notion of New World exceptionalism. By showing that native Americans were not uniquely affected by European diseases, Alchon also undercuts the stereotypical notion of the Americas as a new Eden, free of disease and violence until the intrusion of germ-laden, rapacious Europeans. 214pp.. 8) The Perreaus and Mrs. Rudd - Forgery and Betrayal in Eighteenth-Century London
Andrew, Donna T.; McGowen, Randall

Berkeley: University of California Press, 2001. The Perreaus and Mrs. Rudd tells the remarkable story of a complex forgery uncovered in London in 1775. Like the trials of Martin Guerre and O.J. Simpson, the Perreau-Rudd case - filled with scandal, deceit, and mystery - preoccupied a public hungry for sensationalism. Peopled with such familiar figures as John Wilkes, King George III, Lord Mansfield, and James Boswell, this story reveals the deep anxieties of this period of English capitalism. The case acts as a prism that reveals the hopes, fears, and prejudices of that society. Above all, this episode presents a parable of the 1770s, when London was the center of European finance and national politics, of fashionable life and tell-all journalism, of empire achieved and empire lost. The crime, a hanging offense, came to light with the arrest of identical twin brothers, Robert and Daniel Perreau, after the former was detained trying to negotiate a forged bond. At their arraignment they both accused Daniel's mistress, Margaret Caroline Rudd, of being responsible for the crime. The brothers' trials coincided with the first reports of bloodshed in the American colonies at Lexington and Concord and successfully competed for space in the newspapers. From March until the following January, people could talk of little other than the fate of the Perreaus and the impending trial of Mrs. Rudd. The participants told wildly different tales and offered strikingly different portraits of themselves. The press was filled with letters from concerned or angry correspondents. The public, deeply divided over who was guilty, was troubled by evidence that suggested not only that fair might be foul, but that it might not be possible to decide which was which. While the decade of the 1770s has most frequently been studied in relation to imperial concerns and their impact upon the political institutions of the day, this book draws a different portrait of the period, making a cause celebre its point of entry. Exhaustively researched and brilliantly presented, it offers both a vivid panorama of London and a gauge for tracking the shifting social currents of the period.Head of d/j spine slightly rubbed, slight fading to d/j.. 15) Plagues and Poxes : The Impact of Human History on Epidemic Disease
Bollet, Alfred Jay

New York: Demos Medical Publishing, 2004. Since publication of the initial version of Plagues & Poxes in 1987, which had the optimistic subtitle """"The Rise and Fall of Epidemic Disease,"""" the rise of new diseases such as AIDS and the deliberate modification and weaponization of diseases such as anthrax have changed the way we perceive infectious disease. With major modifications to deal with this new reality, the acclaimed author of Civil War Medicine: Challenges and Triumphs has updated and revised this series of essays about changing disease patterns in history and some of the key events and people involved in them. It deals with the history of major outbreaks of disease - both infectious diseases such as plague and smallpox and noninfectious diseases - and shows how they are in many cases caused inadvertently by human actions, including warfare, commercial travel, social adaptations, and dietary modifications. To these must now be added discussion of the intentional spreading of disease by acts of bioterrorism, and the history and knowledge of those diseases that are thought to be potential candidates for intentional spread by bioterrorists.Among the many topics discussed are: How the spread of smallpox and measles among previously unexposed populations in the Americas, the introduction of malaria and yellow fever from Africa via the importation of slaves into the Western hemisphere, and the importation of syphilis to Europe all are related to the modern interchange of diseases such as AIDS. How the ever-larger populations in the cities of Europe and North America gave rise to """"crowd diseases"""" such as polio by permitting the existence of sufficient numbers of non-immune people in sufficient numbers to keep the diseases from dying out. How the domestication of animals allowed diseases of animals to affect humans, or perhaps become genetically modified to become epidemic human diseases. Why the concept of deficiency diseases was not understood before the early twentieth century; disease, after all, was the presence of something abnormal, how could it be due to the absence of something? In fact, the first epidemic disease in human history probably was iron deficiency anemia. How changes in the availability and nature of specific foods have affected the size of population groups and their health throughout history. The introduction of potatoes to Ireland and corn to Europe, and the relationship between the modern technique of rice milling and beriberi, all illustrate the fragile nutritional state that results when any single vegetable crop is the main source of food. Why biological warfare is not a new phenomenon. There have been attempts to intentionally cause epidemic disease almost since the dawn of recorded history, including the contamination of wells and other water sources of armies and civilian populations; of course, the spread of smallpox to Native Americans during the French and Indian War is known to every schoolchild. With our increased technology, it is not surprising that we now have to deal with problems such as weaponized spores of anthrax. . ISBN: 188879979X. First Edition. Paperback. 16) Patriotism, Power and Print: National Consciousness in Tudor England
Brennan, Gillian E

Ithaca, New York, U.S.A.: Duquesne Univ Press, 2003. This study examines English patriotism in the sixteenth century to discern its nature and modes of cultural expression, and to consider its use in political and religious propaganda. Focusing on a time when patriotism had yet to be truly conceptualised, Brennan investigates the sixteenth century while giving voice to the controversy between modernist and revisionist writers concerning the timing of the birth of nationalism. This astute work deals with a broad range of historical and literary texts, many of which are not often explored. 160pp.N.B.Top edge of d/j spine slightly rubbed.. ISBN: 0820703397. First Edition. 17) 1066: The Hidden History of the Bayeux Tapestry
Bridgeford, Andrew

London: Fourth Estate, 2004. A brilliant new reading of the Bayeux Tapestry that radically alters our understanding of the events of 1066 and reveals the astonishing story of the survival of early medieval Europe's greatest treasure. The Bayeux Tapestry was embroidered (it's not really a tapestry) in the late eleventh century. As an artefact, it is priceless, incomparable -- nothing of it's delicacy and texture, let alone wit, survives from the period. As a pictorial story it is delightful: the first feature-length cartoon. As history it is essential: it represents the moment of Britain's last conquest by a foreign army and celebrates the Norman victory over the blinded Saxon Harold. Or does it?In this brilliant and dogged piece of detective interpretation, Andrew Bridgeford looks at the narrative contained within the tapestry and has discovered a wealth of new information. Who commissioned it? Who made it? Who is the singular dwarf named as Turold? Why, in a work that celebrates a Norman conquest is the defeated Harold treated so nobly? Is Harold indeed the victim of the arrow from the sky? And who is the figure depicted in the tapestry who, at the moment of crisis for the Normans rallies the army just at the point when it mistakenly believes William is dead and it will be defeated?Using the tapestry, the book retells with vivid characterisation the story of the remaking of England in and after 1066. It is a compelling story, as is the tale of the extraordinary survival of the tapestry itself: history has rarely been writ so large, with such fine detail and yet been so veiled in mystery. 354pp.. 25) Rulers of the Ottoman Empire the Sultans of the Osman Gazi Dynasty
Kostova, Svetlozara

Sofia: Kibea, 2003. This illustrated volume presents the portraits of the thirty-six rulers of the Ottoman Empire, from Osman I Gazi to Mehmet VI. The tale of their lives and of the major events during their rule follows the development of a small border principality into a powerful empire spreading over three continents, incorporating in its heyday an immense territory and a wide variety of peoples, to pass through its long and painful disintegration and come to its inevitable collapse in the early 20th century. What kind of people were the sultans? What did they look like? How did they act as statesmen and in their private life? What were their merits and vices? How did they become all-powerful lords or mere toys in the hands of their advisors? The unbiased tale of the life of these persons who bore the burden of power is effectively the history of the Ottoman Empire -- pathetic and proud, cruel and genuine, with its ups and downs, entwining the fate of many peoples and nations and leaving an indelible if ambiguous mark in the annals of humankind. 120pp.. 27) Tudor Church Militant: Edward VI and the Protestant Reformation
MacCulloch, Diarmaid

London: Allen Lane, 1999. The boy-king Edward VI, last of the male Tudors, died while still a teenager, his plans for his country's future soon to be overturned by his Roman Catholic half-sister Mary. Yet his reign has a significance in English history out of all proportion to its brief six-year span. During its course, England's rulers spearheaded a religious revolution which propelled them into the heart of the European Protestant Reformation. They deliberately sponsored the destruction of a thousand-year-old devotional world, and they let loose an explosive new form of Christianity within the realm. This moulded the future identity of the English nation, created a shape for the Church of England which remains today, and inspired one of the foundation documents of English prose, the Book of Common Prayer, a key text in the development of one of the world's most widely spoken languages. In this book, based on the Birkbeck Lectures at Cambridge University for 1997-98, Diarmaid MacCullogh underlines the significance of Edward's turbulent and neglected reign. He take a fresh look at the life and beliefs of the young king and of the ruthless politicians who jostled for power around him. He analyzes the carefully phased but single-minded strategy for bringing in the Protestant revolution; he assesses the support which the revolution enjoyed among the people of England; and he emphasizes the heady enthusiasm that many felt for what was happening. He describes the crisis of 1549, when nationwide unrest divided the government and people and brought about the overthrow of the King's charismatic uncle and Lord Protector, the Duke of Somerset. Although the regime collapsed in apparent failure and disgrace on Edward's death in 1553, the story does not end there; a second half-sister, Elizabeth, succeeded Mary and brought Protestantism back to the official Church, though in a subtly different form. The tensions between her vision of the Church and that of the dead boy-king continued to haunt English religion. MacCulloch traces the strange afterlife of Edward's reign, its surprising connections with the civil wars which convulsed the British Isles a century later, and the effect it still has on English life. 283pp.. 30) God and Gold : Britain, America, and the Making of the Modern World
Mead, Walter Russell

London: Atlantic Books, 2008. "God and Gold" is a brilliantly stimulating and provocative look at why, for over 300 years, the Anglo-Saxon powers have dominated the world economically and militarily. For four hundred years, Britain, America and their allies have dominated the world both militarily and economically. They have won the wars - the hot wars, the cold wars and the trade wars - time and again; and yet the battle for hearts and minds has proved far harder to win. In "God and Gold", Walter Russell Mead examines why this has been the case and what the overwhelming ascendancy and concentration of power in the hands of 'les Anglo-Saxons' has meant for the direction of world history. In so doing, he sheds scintillating new light on the current political, economic and cultural climate, and suggests where we might be heading from here.. ISBN: 9781843547259. Paperback. 32) Piety and Plague: From Byzantium to the Baroque
Mormando, Franco and Worcester, Thomas

Missouri, USA: Truman State University Press, 2007. Plague was one of the enduring facts of everyday life on the European continent, from earliest antiquity through the first decades of the eighteenth century. It represents one of the most important influences on the development of Europe's society and culture. In order to understand the changing circumstances of the political, economic, ecclesiastical, artistic, and social history of that continent, it is important to understand epidemic disease and society's response to it. To date, the largest portion of scholarship about plague has focused on its political, economic, demographic, and medical aspects. This interdisciplinary volume offers greater coverage of the religious and the psychological dimensions of plague and of European society's response to it through many centuries and over a wide geographical terrain, including Byzantium. 329pp.. 35) Clandestine Marriage in England, 1500-1850
Outhwaite, R. B

London: The Hambledon Press, 1995. While marriages were supposed to be celebrated publicly by priests, in churches where the parties were known, many couples had reasons - among them parental disapproval, religious nonconformity, property considerations and previous entanglements - to marry in other ways. Nor was this difficult where there was no unified marriage code, where a simple exchange of vows, might constitute a valid marriage, and where unbeneficed priests were prepared to perform the ceremony in return for a drink. Clandestine marriage had represented a problem to the church and state, and to the rights of property, since the Middle Ages, eluding a variety of attempts to control it. By the 18th century it had become a scandal, with Fleet parsons marrying thousands of couples a year. In 1753 Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act nullified such irregular marriages, only to drive them to adopt other guises until the introduction of civil marriage in 1836. This study explores the nature and scale of clandestine marriage. The author describes why it attracted so many customers and why it was so hard to suppress. 38) The Miraculous Fever-Tree: The Cure That Changed the World
Rocco, Fiammetta

London: Harper Collins, 2004. Malaria comes from the Italian word "Mal'aria" or bad air. For centuries malaria killed millions - Alexander the Great was one of its better-known victims - and its debilitating effects have been linked to the demise of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The traditional remedies of bloodletting killed off many who may have been spared by the fevers. In 1735 Joseph de Jussieu set out for Latin America as the first non-Spanish expedition to be allowed to enter the continent. The Peruvian bark or Jesuit's powder had been known in Europe since 1644 but met with violent opposition from the medical establishment and the public. So feared were papists in general and Jesuits in particular that throughout Protestant Europe there were demonstrations against the bark, and the talk was of Papist plots to poison. This changed when Charles II was cured by the bark and then the race was on to obtain seeds of the precious trees. Fiametta Rocco - who herself has had malaria - explores the history of the ravages of the disease, of the heroism and tragedy of those who have attempted to find cures and the manner in which the discovery of quinine opened the door of the tropics to western imperial adventure.348pp.. 45) Making Sense of Global History
Sogner, Solvi

Oslo: Universitetsforlaget, 2001. Historians' task has always been to make sense of the world. In an age of globalisation this task has become even more formidable. In this book some of the world's most prominent historians take stock of the new situation, reflect on its implications and offer brilliant insights into the fascinations of the new field. Two thousand historians met in Oslo, Norway in the year 2000. High on their agenda was the state of global history. "Making Sense of Global History" presents selected papers dealing with the status and future of global history, cultural contacts between the continents over the centuries, the manifold construction and division of time, and with the use and misuse of history worldwide. This commemorative volume from the 19th International Congress of the Historical Sciences contains 24 papers - all chosen for their excellence and general appeal. 416pp. . ISBN: 8215001068. Sundberg,Kerstin,Germundsson,Tomas,Hansen,Kjell (eds)

Sweden: Nordic Academic Press, 2004. This anthology is based on a symposium which had as its key issue a critical discussion of different theories of modernisation from the perspective of people's activities in local manorial societies. Modernisation can be studied in terms of changing values, norms and social relationships. From a theoretical point of view the book makes use of the possibility to change main macro-conceptions of the modernisation process, using dichotomies such as feudal/capitalist and individual/collective, and it also tries to integrate tradition and continuity perspective. 416pp,.
