Intimate Letters of James Gibbons Huneker
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1924 Collected and edited by Josephine Huneker. Machine numbered limited edition 597/2050. Corners bumped. James Gibbons Huneker (1860-1921) was an American music writer and critic, born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania He studied music in Europe under Alfredo Barili and others. He returned to New York City in 1885 and remained there until his death. His level at the piano was such that Liszt's student, Rafael Joseffy, had Huneker serve as as an assistant teacher to his piano students. Huneker wrote the analysis and commentary on the complete works of Chopin for Schirmer's music publishing company. His analysis of all the piano solo works of Brahms, written shortly after the complete works of Brahms were published after Brahms' death, is highly regarded. Huneker is mostly remembered now for his music criticism. He was a music critic who familiarized Americans with then modern European artistic movements and wrote in a highly subjective style, full of metaphorical descriptions. Huneker was equally proficient in his knowledge of art and literature, and was one of the first to write of Gauguin, Ibsen, Wagner, Nietzsche, France, Faguet, Van Gogh, and George Moore.. Service Slang

London: Faber and Faber, 1943 Desperate to avoid 'bubble-dancing', join the 'dromestoners' or eat a nice 'tiddly oggy'? Baffled? Well, pull yourself out of the 'aspargus bed' and dip into Service Slang to find out what these expressions and many more mean. You would be a 'sad apple' to call it a dictionary, it is more a light-hearted survey of expressions prevalent in the Army, Navy and R.A.F. during the Second World War. 'Chocks away' and 'draw your pint'. Foreword by T. L. Leigh-Mallory. Virtually mint copy with one small grease spot on the front board. A fine example of slang and of 1940s typography.. Parisian Sketches
London: Fortune Press, 1962. This series of sketches represents a Huysmans who still held within him love/hate fascination with Parisian life, before he would turn his back on Paris, and Zola's realist movement, in A Rebours and the guidebook like novels charting the adventures of Durtal, his alter ego. If these Parisian Sketches are Baudelairean in one sense, where beauty and pleasure are drawn from deviance and repugnance, and the city dweller's manipulation of nature in order to match his bloated requirements evokes his own beautiful downfall, they just as easily evoke the colourful world of Renoir and Monet. They are impressions that precede the delight of Jean Renoir's "French Can-Can" as much as the bourgeois hypocrisies of Bunuel's "Belle de Jour". A translation of Croquis Parisiens by Richard Griffths. The first English edition of these delightful prose poems. (d'Arch Smith 304). Rare.. First English Edition. Hard Cover. New/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

The Bievre River
London: Langtry Press, 1986 Translated by Darius Halpern and Ellen Moerman. The Bièvre is a 32.8 km long river of the Île-de-France région that flows into the Seine (left bank) in Paris. The name translates to "Beaver River" in English. The current course is said to have been modified from its natural course to supply irrigation for an abbey located outside the city wall of Phillipe-Auguste. This diversion is reflected in maps of Paris dating from the 13th century. Historically the river was heavily industrialized with mills, and supported numerous tanneries and dye-makers. This led to serious pollution concerns that persist up to the present time. The river is nowadays buried in tunnels for its whole course within Paris; as of 2004, the city of Paris is considering uncovering some sections of the Bièvre. Rare.. Signed by Publisher. First English Edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Jill Heberden. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Private Press. more information
