Tijuana Bibles: Art and Wit in America's Forbidden Funnies, 1930s-1950s
New York: Simon & Schuster, 2004 A first-ever collection of America's underground pornographic comics from the 1930s to the 1950s. Known as "Tijuana Bibles" these highly explicit comic books constitute a fascinating view of the unknown, erotic America of that turbulent era. Tijuana, the Mexican border town just south of Los Angeles, was made infamous by two things: it's reputation as the American tourist's Sodom and Gomorrah (think Prohibition days and live sex shows with donkeys) and the eponymous Bible. "Tijuana Bibles" (known also as 'eight-pagers') were pornographic comic books produced in the United States from the 1930s to the 1950s. Printed in black on cheap white paper and eight pages long, their popularity peaked during the time of the Great Depression. They were drawn and written by anonymous artists and printed and distributed by no less shady publishers. The art is crude but executed with immense vitality. The subject matter usually consists of explicit sexual encounters featuring popular cartoon characters, as well as famous film stars and politicians. In introduction Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman writes that these 'cheerfully pornographic and downright illegal booklets...probably weren't produced in Tijuana (or Havana or Paris or London, as some of the covers imply)'. Nor were they bibles. The location was more likely ironic. As wry and raunchy as the subject it celebrates, this inspired volume introduces a new generation to the "Tijuana Bibles", underground comic art above ground for the first time since they were produced. Still unexpectedly shocking and devoted to making a sexual mockery of every sacred cow in the pasture, the Bibles are unveiled here with 100 classic examples in full. It's folk art with a subversive edge.. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. (more information)

The Girl Problem: Female Sexual Delinquency in New York, 1900-1930
Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1995 Alexander tells the stories of young unmarried working-class women jailed in the early 20th century for engaging in sexual activity. She argues that such behaviour was not punished among more affluent classes. The 'Girl Problem' is based in large part on the records of one hundred young women incarcerated between 1900 and 1930 in two institutions, the New York State Reformatory for Women at Bedford Hills and the Western House of Refuge for Women at Albion, in upstate New York. The records are rich with detail, including psychological assessments, correspondence from families and between inmates and others, and parole applications, that Alexander has used to good effect. Nearly all of those incarcerated were poor and came from immigrant or African-American homes.. First Edition. Cloth. New/New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. (more information)

Love and Sexuality in Modern Arabic Literature
London: Saqi Books, 1995 In segregated, conservative societies with a repressive attitude to women, writing on the theme of love and sexuality are of particular interest. Among the plethora of studies on modern Arabic literature, this book is a major treatment of what has generally been a taboo subject. The scope covers the entire history of modern Arabic literature from the late-19th century to the end of the 1980s, with examples drawn from countries as diverse as Egypt and Kuwait. Although the main accent is on the prose of Egypt and the countries of the Mashreq, North African literature is also included. Examples are drawn form poetry, the novel and the short story. Topics range from "Erotic awareness in the early Egyptian short story" to "Death and desire in Iraqi War literature", from "Fathers and husbands as tyrants and victims" to "The foreign woman and the European mistress in the Maghreb novel". "Love and the mechanism of power" is analyzed, as are "Sexual politics and narrative strategies". Love and sexuality are shown as key elements in the work of Tawfik al-Hakim, Fuad al-Tikirli, the Kuwaiti writer Layla al-Uthman annd Nizar Qabbani. Other chapters treat "The lover in popular 20th-century Arabic drama", "Love and beyond in Mahjar literature" and "The romantic imagination and the female ideal".. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Bride of the Birch: The Rosa Coote Letters
Bexhill-on-Sea: AKS Books, 2003 First published as a serial in the underground magazine, The Pearl, in 1879 and 1880, Bride of the Birch is a series of letters from Miss Coote, now an old maid, to a younger lady friend. Miss Coote admits to being wedded to the birch rod and details her experiences of being severely whipped as a child, both at home by her grandfather, and then at school at Miss Flaybums Academy. As a woman of property, she sets up her own home with a strict disciplinary régime and the birch rod is in frequent use. The gardeners wife and her two young daughters incur Miss Cootes wrath for stealing fruit and all three are soundly flogged, as is a sneak-thief who tries to hide her ill-gotten gains in her private parts! "Tie her to the horse and get ready for business," the General ordered, as he seated himself in the chair to look on at his ease. "Come, Rosa, dear, dont be troublesome and make your grandfather more angry," said Mrs. Mansell, unfastening my waistband. "Slip off your dress whilst the girls put the horse in the middle of the room." Oh! No! No! I wont be whipped," I screamed. "Oh! Sir! Oh grandfather! Do have mercy," I implored, throwing myself on my knees before the old man. "Come, come, it's no use showing the white feather, Rosa, it's for your own good! Now, no more nonsense! Mrs. Mansell, do your duty, and let us get the painful business over with; she isnt one of my stock if she doesnt show her pluck when it comes to the pinch.". First Edition. Paperback.
