Boys from The Blackstuff is a British television drama series of five episodes, originally transmitted from October 10 to November 7, 1982 on BBC2. The serial was written by Liverpudlian playwright Alan Bleasdale, as a sequel to a television play, The Black Stuff, which he had originally written for BBC1's Play for Today anthology series in 1978, although it had languished untransmitted for two years before eventually being screened in 1980. The acclaim that the play received on its eventual transmission led to the commissioning of the sequel serial, of which Bleasdale had already written a considerable amount. It is described on the website of the British Film Institute as: "A seminal drama series... a warm, humorous but ultimately tragic look at the way economics affect ordinary people... TV's most complete dramatic response to the Thatcher era and as a lament to the end of a male, working class British culture. The stories of five unemployed tarmac layers (hence 'the black stuff') after they have lost their jobs due to the events of the original play. Set in Bleasdale's home city of Liverpool and reflecting many of his own experiences of life in the city, each episode focused on a different member of the group. London: British Film Institute, 1972 Booklet on film director Victor Saville, a founding father of British filmmaking, Victor Saville created such classics as "I Was a Spy", "Evergreen", "Gooodbye, Mr. Chips", "The Mortal Storm", " A Woman's Face" and "Green Dolphin Street". Saville started small in the film business after being discharged from his unit in World War I following an injury. Working first for a distribution company, Saville was exposed to the earliest British silent films as well as imported "blockbusters" such as "The Birth of a Nation" and "Intolerance" by D.W. Griffith. In 1922, he ventured to Hollywood to persuade silent film star Betty Compson to star in his first film, "Woman to Woman", ultimately made with the assistance of Alfred Hitchcock in his first film job as assistant art director. The daring plan is led by British Intelligence officers Col. Lewis Pugh (Gregory Peck) and Capt. Gavin Stewart (Roger Moore).
