Mathias Grunewald
Munchen: O.C. Recht Verlag, 1923 Includes 14 plates. German text. Front hinge cracked but holding, slight nick to spine. Matthias Grünewald (c.1470 - August 31, 1528), is a highly regarded figure from the German Renaissance. He painted primarily religious works, especially somber and awe-filled crucifixion scenes. The visionary character of his work, with its expressive colour and line, is in stark contrast to Albrecht Dürer's works. His real name was Mathis Gothart Neithart. A 17th-century writer, Joachim von Sandrart, mistakenly identified him by the name Grünewald; his real name was not discovered till the 1920s. He was born in Würzburg in the 1470s. He served as court painter and hydraulic engineer to two successive archbishops of Mainz, Uriel von Gemmingen and Albrecht von Brandenburg, in the German Rhineland from about 1510 to 1525. He left this post apparently because of Lutheran sympathies. Grünewald died in Halle in 1528.. First German Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

Work, Play and No Rest
London: Work, Play and No Rest, 2004 Photoraphs taken on the hoof during a five-year backpack pilgrimage around South Africa, Colombia, Peru and Mexico. Colombian Photographer, Julio Cesar Osorio, wanted to reflect the memories of his own childhood through camera lens; concentrating in the poorest areas of the countries visited to show how children live only with the basics but who have found happiness in daily chores. It prefers to focus on these moments of sanctuary from grinding poverty: a cheerful Colombian girl playing in a river, three pre-adolescent Venezuelan windscreen cleaners, showing the vitality of their age, and the day to day mischievousness of childhood, rather than images of abject realities that shock and are then forgotten. The main concern of this project is to urge people to help those or any children that are not by their own faults, but that have just happen to be born into those circumstances. Contains 158 photographs of poor and disadvantaged children in Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela and South Africa. 20% from each copy sold will go to two charitable organisations looking after deprived children in Abancay in Peru and Cape Town in South Africa. "Colombian photographer shows his unique way of capturing the beauty of things that most of us would not see" Bookseller Magazine. Limited edition of 2000 copies signed by Julio Osario.. Film Foto Wiener Actionismus
Wien: Galerie Julius Hummel, 1998 Hermann Nitsch, Otto Muehl, Gunter Brus, Rufolf Schwarzkogler were four artists who, during the Sixties, became notorious for pushing the definition of art to an extreme which has yet to be surpassed. Variously fined, gaoled, and forced into exile, they were ignored by the art establishment of the day, only to be hailed in recent years as one of the most outstanding and unique contributions to post-war art in Europe. Exaggeration and myth still obscure their activities, however, and their actual motives for an art centred on the examination of taboos, the "hidden" secrets of the body, the aesthetics of destruction and the possibilities of regeneration have remained elusive. Subsequent generations of artists have claimed them as their forefathers or unscrupulously borrowed their ideas (but without approaching the intensity of their actions), and while international exhibitions have reclaimed their work for the visual arts, their writings have remained largely unpublished since they first appeared in small mimeographed editions, or are long since out of print. The Vienna Actionists were indeed unique at the very outset of post-war performance art they trod a path very different from the "Happenings" in the USA or the belated neo-Dada pranks of many of their contemporaries. They not only established a new territory for art but they explored it so thoroughly as to make most subsequent "body art" simply irrelevant. Principle events included:The Blood Organ, The Festival of Psycho-Physical Naturalism, Material Action and Direct Art, the Destruction in Art Symposium, the Orgies Mysteries Theatre, the Vietnam Party, Body Analysis, Zock and The Zock Festival, the Art and Revolution scandal. Text in English and French.. First Edition. Paperback. New/New. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

Eva Hesse
New York: New York University Press, 1976 Eva Hesse (January 11, 1936 - May 29, 1970), was a German-born American sculptor, known for her pioneering work in materials such as latex, fiberglass, and plastics. After graduating from New York's School of Industrial Art in 1952, Hesse studied at New York's Pratt Institute (1952-1953) and Cooper Union (1954-1957), then at the Yale School of Art and Architecture (1957-1959), where she studied under Josef Albers and received a B.F.A. Upon returning to New York she made friends with many young artists. In 1961, she met and married fellow sculptor Tom Doyle. In August 1962 Eva Hesse and Tom Doyle participated in an Allan Kaprow Happening at the Art Students League in Woodstock, New York. There Hesse made her first three dimensional piece: a costume for the Happening. In 1963 Eva Hesse had a one-person show of works on paper at the Allen Stone Gallery on New York's Upper East Side. The couple, whose marriage was coming apart, lived and worked in an abandoned textile mill in the Ruhr region of Germany for about a year during 1964-1965. Hesse was not happy to be back in Germany, but began sculpting with materials that had been left behind in the abandoned factory: first relief sculptures made of cloth-covered cord, electrical wire, and masonite, with playful titles like Eighter from Decatur and Oomamaboomba. Returning to New York City in 1965 she began working in the materials that would become characteristic of her work: latex, fiberglass, and plastics. She was associated with the mid-1960s "anti-form" trend in sculpture, participating in New York exhibits such as "Eccentric Abstraction" and "Abstract Inflationism and Stuffed Expressionism" (both 1966). In September 1968 Eva Hesse began teaching at the School of Visual Arts. Her only one-person show of sculpture in her lifetime was "Chain Polymers" at the Fischbach Gallery on W. 57th Street in New York in November 1968; her large piece Expanded Expansion showed at the Whitney Museum in the 1969 exhibit "Anti-Illusion: Process/Materials". There have been dozens of major posthumous exhibitions in the United States and Europe, including at The Guggenheim Museum (1972, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2002), and the Jewish Museum of New York (2006). Except for fiberglass, most of her favored materials age badly, so much of her work presents conservators with an enormous challenge. Arthur Danto, writing of the Jewish Museum's 2006 retrospective, refers to "the discolorations, the slackness in the membrane-like latex, the palpable aging of the material. Yet somehow the work does not feel tragic. Instead it is full of life, of eros, even of comedy, Each piece in the show vibrates with originality and mischief." In 1969 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her death in 1970 ended a career spanning only ten years. Some bumps and creases otherwise an unread copy.. First Edition. Paperback. The Life of William Morris
New York: Benjamin Blom, 1968. William Morris (24 March 1834 - 3 October 1896) was an English architect, furniture and textile designer, artist, writer, socialist and Marxist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement. Morris wrote and published poetry, fiction, and translations of ancient and medieval texts throughout his life. His best-known works include The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems (1858), The Earthly Paradise (1868-1870), A Dream of John Ball and the utopian News from Nowhere. He was an important figure in the emergence of socialism in Britain, founding the Socialist League in 1884, but breaking with the movement over goals and methods by the end of that decade. He devoted much of the rest of his life to the Kelmscott Press, which he founded in 1891. The 1896 Kelmscott edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer is considered a masterpiece of book design..
