A training accident in 1962, cost him a leg. He fought to stay a Marine. Within 11 months he was again going to the field, parachuting, and scuba diving with the First Force Recon Company. In 1965 Sgt. Hamblen volunteered for service in Vietnam. While there he helped train teams of Vietnamese for missions in both North and South Vietnam. By the time he left Vietnam, after 30 months of service, he had been on more 60 missions, had been wounded twice and asof that time at least, the first ond only Marine to go into combat with a prosthesis.
