The Peerage of England, Scotland, and Ireland; or The Ancient and Present State of the Nobility
London: Owen; Davis; Debrett, 1790. Three volume set bound in brown marbled leather decorated with gilt title and decorative bands on the spine. The full title of the set continues as "Containing a Genealogical Account of the Respective Peers; Whether by Tenure, Summons, or Creation; Their Descents and Collateral Branches; Births, Marriages, Issue; Chief Seats, Coats of Arms, Crests, Supporters. And Literal Translations of the Mottos. To Which are Annexed the Extinct and Forfeited Peerages, and an Alphabetical Index of All Family Names of the Peers, and Titles of Their Eldest Sons." Volume I is "The Peerage of England"; volume II, "The Peerage of Scotland", and volume III, "The Peerage of Ireland." The boards of all three volumes are worn, with the leather worn away on the bottom corners of the front and rear boards. The front board of volume III is almost completely loose, although all of the pages are intact. The other boards are well attached, although with slight cracking at the bottom edges of the spine. Several of the coats of arms in volume I have been removed, with two of these attached to the front paste downs of volume I and II. The pages are discolored from age but are not marked, except for a neatly penned notation of "Norton Place" on the front paste down of volume I and a pencil notation on the obverse of the front free end paper of the same volume to the effect that several of the coats of arms have been removed.. Psychiatry and the Community in Nineteenth-Century America
NY: Basic Books, 1969. This book is from the library of a national magazine. The dust jacket is worn overall. About 1/4" of the jacket is worn away on three corners and about 1/2" is rubbed away on the fourth. There is a 1/4" closed tear on the top front with a 3" long crease extending from the tear in the direction of the spine. The top of the spine is severely chipped with several pieces missing; this extends down about 1/2" along the spine. The top of the rear is also chipped around closed tears of 1" and 2" at either side of the top. There is a 1" by 1" piece missing from the bottom of the spine at the front and a 1 1/2" closed tear is found at the bottom of the spine at the rear. Two 1/4" closed tears are found on the bottom of the jacket rear. The author's name is typed on a tag that is taped to the bottom of the spine. The library name is stamped in red on the front and rear free end papers and on the page fore edges. The pages are faintly yellowed and the binding is tight.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Fair.
