8) C.R. Mackintosh: The Poetics of Workmanship
Brett, David

United Kingdom: Reaktion Books, 1992 Fine condition. NO remainder marks or clippings. Tight spine, clean pages. Nicely illustrated throughout. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. 152 pages. Synopsis Between 1896 and 1906, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) produced a series of buildings and interiors in and around Glasgow of such startling invention that he immediately established himself as one of the truly great figures in early twentieth-century architecture and design. David Brett argues that Mackintosh's originality was grounded in a highly subjective "poetics of workmanship", in which the structure, features, interiors and furnishings of each individual building became subject to a unifying system of forms, metaphors and unconscious associations. The system Mackintosh evolved allowing for the formulation of an almost infinite series of ensembles. After focusing on the various decorative details and interior spaces of Mackintosh's buildings the author reaches to the heart of Mackintosh's poetic system - the suffused eroticism of the sleek, "feminine" and intensely private "white interiors". A notable feature of this persuasive reappraisal of Mackintosh's work is the wealth of photographs by the author showing rarely featured details of buildings, interiors and furnishings. . Day, Christopher

Thorsons Pub, 1995 Near-fine condition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Tight spine, bright pages. Illustrated throughout. 192 pages. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. - Synopsis Revised to incorporate the changes in opinions and attitudes since its first publication, the second edition of 'Places of the Soul' has brought Christopher Day's classic text into the 21st century. This new edition of the seminal text reminds us that true sustainable design does not simply mean energy efficient building. Sustainable buildings must provide for the 'soul'. For Christopher Day architecture is not just about a building's appearance, but how the building is experienced. 'Places of the Soul' presents buildings as environment, intrinsic to their surroundings, and offers design principles that will open the eyes of the architecture student and professional alike, presenting ideas quite different to the orthodoxy of modern architectural education. Christopher Day's experience as an architect, self-builder, professor and sculptor have all added to the development of his ideas that encompass issues of economic and social sustainability, commercial pressures and consensus design. This book presents these ideas and outlines universal principles that will be of interest and value to architects, builders, planners and developers alike. * Author is leading authority in this field and has a throng of devoted admirers * 1st edition is considered a classic in the industry and it has been renewed for the 21st century * Sustainability and environmental design is one of the key areas of interest and study for architects today . Gill, Brendan

Ballantine Books, 1988 A photo of this book is available. NO remainder marks or clippings. Tight spine, bright pages. Nicely illustrated. 544 pages. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Covers are clean (NO tears). Synopsis Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is often described as the greatest of American architects. His works—among them Taliesin North, Taliesin West, Fallingwater, the Johnson Wax buildings, the Guggenheim Museum earned him a good measure of his fame, but his flamboyant personal life earned him the rest. Here Brendan Gill, a personal friend of Wright and his family, gives us not only the fullest, fairest, and most entertaining account of Wright to date, but also strips away the many masks the architect tirelessly constructed to fascinate his admirers and mislead his detractors. Enriched by hitherto unpublished letters and 300 photographs and drawings, this definitive biography makes Wright, in all his creativity, crankiness, and zest, fairly leap from its pages. Chicago Tribune The liveliest, most astringent and eminently readable biography of Wright yet published. Biography Brendan Gill (1914-1997) was a staff writer for theNew Yorker for over sixty years. He was the author of over twenty books, including his memoir, Here at the New Yorker (also available from Da Capo Press/Perseus Books Group), three works of fiction, and biographies of Cole Porter, Tallulah Bankhead, and Charles Lindbergh. . Girourard, Mark

Penguin Books, 1978 Very-good+, clean copy of this over-sized book. NO remainder marks or clippings. Pictorial covers are clean (NO tears). Very-nicely illustrated throughout. 344 pages. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Tight spine, clean pages. Review Architectural historian Mark Girouard (The Victorian Country House, Sweetness and Light: The "Queen Anne" Movement) has opened up an absorbing and highly promising field of study by looking into the social arrangements that shaped the country house from the Middle Ages onward. As he notes in a brief but far-reaching introduction, land meant tenants (first as soldiers, then as political supporters) plus their rents, and thus represented, for many centuries, "the only sure basis of power." Landed estates introduced town customs and culture to the countryside until, in the 19th century, town and country parted ways: the landed gentry became the agricultural party, as opposed to the town-dwelling middle classes. At the same time, the multi-class medieval country household - eating in one great hall - split into higher and lower orders rigorously separated by a green baize door. The permutations of this change, minutely traced and sumptuously illustrated, include the tower mystique which long outlasted any need for protection; the evolution equally of libraries and galleries and sanitary facilities; the hierarchical implications of the formal house, suited to absolute monarchy, and the substitution of "a series of communal rooms for entertaining" with the appearance of 18th-century "polite society." Then, with the popularity (and profitability) of agricultural "improvement" and the advent of turnpikes and railroads, country squires could enjoy nature without being imprisoned by it. The house sank into the ground, opened up to the outdoors, and sprawled asymmetrically: "to make a house lopsided became a positively meritorious gesture, an escape from artificiality." A thoroughly intelligent and engaging book. (Kirkus Reviews) Product Description The English country house has flourished over the centuries because of its ability to adapt to the changes in English society. This book is an account of the ways in which the upper-class life style were reflected in the houses in which the wealthy and powerful lived. First published in 1978, this is a history of the English country house from the point of view of its owners and users. Ranging from the Middle Ages to the world of Evelyn Waugh, the author also discusses and illustrates how the life of the upper classes shaped their country hosues, how they entertained and were served, how they ran the country and their estates and how they reconciled personal privacy and public display. . Synopsis er*go*nom*ic (er-ga-'na-mik) adj: designed to allow people and the things people use to interact in the safest, most effective, and most comfortable manner You work indoors. You're not on your feet all day and you do no heavy lifting. You have escaped from the brutal nature of most human labor. And yet at the end of the day you feel exhausted. You have vague aches and pains that you are embarrassed to mention to your doctor. If you do, the doctor gives you some equally vague advice: take it easy; don't push yourself; get more rest. If that doesn't work, maybe you're a whiner, a hypochondriac. Or maybe you're being attacked by your possessions. Perhaps you've been making do with a worn-out old mattress in the bedroom, an office chair that won't let you sit up straight, and a computer screen that you struggle to read with your bifocals. You bought a desk and a file cabinet whose colors complement each other perfectly, but you had no idea how downright irritating ordinary furniture can get if the only choice you bother with is matching style and color. Somewhere in this world is a reading light, chair, bed, perhaps even a keyboard and desk, built just for you. This book will show you how to find them. . Trade Paperback. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Tight spine, bright pages. Previous owner's bookplate in book front on blank page. (Mike Stewart - Jacksonville, Illinois). 148 pages. Library Journal Historic preservation groups will find much of value in this book on restoring, reconstructing, and preserving porches. Compared to the rest of a house, porches suffer most from the ravages of weather; however, they can also be more easily added or remodeled to alter a building's appearance, enclosed to add a room, or even torn away--all with relatively little effort. When seeking to accurately restore an older house, the authors advise that it is necessary first to determine the design, placement, and accoutrements of the original porch. Proper choice of modern materials, informed construction, and knowledge of weathering points, they add, are among the tricks of the trade that can prolong a porch's life and reduce upkeep. The ``how to'' of all this is well covered. Recommended.-- Walter T. Johnston, formerly with Coastal Plain Regional Lib., Tifton, Ga. . Trade Paperback. Price inside dustcover: $40.00. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Green boards with gilt lettering (clean and bright). 240 pages. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Tight spine, bright pages. Very-nicely illustrated throughout. Synopsis Daughter of David Cecil, Lord Burghley, and sixth Marquess of Exeter, Lady Victoria Leatham lives in her family's towering, palatial Elizabethan family home, Burghley House. Lady Victoria first moved into Burghley as a child, in 1956; in 1982 she returned as an adult, with a husband, two children, and several dogs, to begin the restoration of one of England's most magnificent houses and to build a home for her family amid the opulence and splendor of a bygone era. In Life in Burghley, Lady Victoria Leatham recounts the history both of the house - from its construction nearly four hundred years ago by William Cecil - and of many of the precious family heirlooms that adorn its capacious rooms. Home to one of the most valuable collections of seventeenth-century art anywhere in the world, Burghley is widely considered to be the most spectacular surviving house of the Elizabethan age. Lady Victoria Leatham writes candidly and wittily of the struggles and triumphs she has encountered in restoring the uncommonly beautiful house of her forefathers, and of a life spent among villagers and artisans, servants and aristocrats, even royalty, richly and amusingly reminiscent of Upstairs, Downstairs and Chariots of Fire. With delicious stories, lavish color photographs, and informal family portraits, Life at Burghley captures the history of an exceptional family and its extraordinary home. . First American Edition. He also explores the evolution of roadside buildings, from supermarkets and motels to automobile showrooms and drive-in theaters. IF not for this I would have rated this book as Fine. Tight spine, bright pages. Very-nicely illustrated throughout. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. Over-sized. 311 pages. Synopsis This is a book about people and their homes. It is not about architecture, or decorating styles, or real estate, but about the more subtle bonds of feeling we experience with dwellings past and present. By sharing 25 years of research, and interviews with more than 60 individuals, UC Berkeley Architecture Professor Clare Cooper Marcus reveals a groundbreaking theory of what our relationship to our home says about ourselves. House as a Mirror of Self clearly and powerfully illustrates that, beginning in childhood, as we change and grow throughout our lives, our psychological development is punctuated not only by relationships with people, but also by close, affective ties with our physical environment. Annotation This ground-breaking book explores what our relationships to our houses reveal about ourselves. Featuring interviews with over 100 people, and their color drawings about their homes as well as photos of their actual homes, UC Berkeley professor Marcus tells us what our houses would say to us if they could talk. Color drawings. Photos. Publishers Weekly Marcus's eye-opening study of peoples' emotional ties to their houses, apartments, cottages, trailers and other dwellings offers useful, often startling perspectives on what makes a house a home. Maintaining, as did Carl Jung, that one's home is a symbolic mirror of one's inner self, of unconscious wishes and emotions, she interviewed approximately 60 people in their domestic settings, some over a 10-year period. Several respondents excessively bonded to a residence or its contents as a substitute for close relationships with people; at the opposite extreme were those who were unable to settle down in one place because having a permanent abode was fraught with unresolved emotional issues from childhood. Marcus, an architecture professor at UC-Berkeley, ably explores how personal crises, the need for privacy, couples' power struggles, divorce and career changes affect one's feelings about, and design of, one's living environment. Case studies, self-help exercises and informants' color drawings (not seen by PW) of their dwellings support her presentation. . Trade Paperback. 45) If These Walls Had Ears: The Biography of a House
Morgan, James

Warner Books, 1996 Near-new condition. Stated First Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $22.95. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. 273 pages. Illustrated with photos. Synopsis The 1920s-era house on Holly Street had a wrap-around porch, lots of bedrooms, and a central hall with seven doors. It also had ghosts - the joys and pains and human dramas of its residents. Before long, James Morgan, its newest occupant, found himself wanting to learn about the seven other families who had called 501 Holly Street their home. If These Walls had Ears recounts his search to find them, and his discovery of America's social and cultural past through the stories of these real people's lives. Against a backdrop that spans from the Roaring Twenties through the Depression and world war, then from postwar optimism to end-of-century uncertainty, he uncovers tales of bankruptcy, family feuds, lawsuits, personal betrayal, fire, cancer, accidents, the grief of a loved one lost to AIDS. But amid the deep drama, there's also high comedy - teenage girls sneaking out bedroom windows to meet boyfriends, even a gaggle of men in dresses roller-skating through the living room. In telling these stories, James Morgan brings us a story that is known to every one of us in every house in America - the ongoing search for a place that feels like home. As the author discovered why people built, bought, and sold his house, he began to understand the bone-deep link between our homes and our dreams, the state of our relationships, and our hunger for roots and security. At middle life in middle America, James Morgan has written a book about universals of the human condition, about leaving home and coming back, and about finding the place you want to settle down in and stay, within four walls - and within yourself. .
