Reel Women: The World of Women Who Fish

Hillsboro, Oregon, U.S.A.: Beyond Words Pub Co, 1995 Like-new condition. Appears unread. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $24.95. Tight spine, bright pages. NO writing, marks or tears. Very-nicely illustrated throughout. 294 pages. Synopsis For the 15 million women who fish each year, here is the first book ever to chronicle women's extraordinary legacy in the sport. Modern sportfishing began in 1496 with the definitive "Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle," attributed to English noblewoman and nun Dame Juliana Berners. During the five centuries since, women have madeand continue to make fishing history. Reel Women tells the captivating stories of the daring and the ingenious who have made a lasting impact on sportfishing. More than a hundred profiles include such figures as tiny Mrs. Keith Spalding, who landed a 426-pound swordfish in 1921, plus the living legends of flyfishing, big-game saltwater fishing, and bass fishing: from Helen Robinson, who developed a groundbreaking technique for teasing billfish into striking an artificial fly, to Sugar Ferris, founder of the first bass-fishing circuit for women. Featuring a comprehensive women's angling resource directory and a bibliography of books by or for women anglers, Reel Women is a great catch for readers on the distaff side of the rod-and-reel world. Annotation: Fishing has long been considered a man's sport. However, women today constitute more than one-third of all anglers and have displayed an avid passion for fishing since the late 1880s. Foggia, herself an avid angler, tells the complete story of fisherwomen for the first time.. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

Alden, the captain of Linda's first fishing expedition, has seen his share of mishaps and adventures at sea. When Linda shares memories of navigating her ship through one of the craziest storms she's ever seen, Alden quickly follows up with his own tales. Then other fishermen, who are sitting on the periphery attentively listening, decide to weigh in with yarns of their own. All Fishermen Are Liars brims with true stories of the most eccentric crew member, the funniest episode, the biggest fish, and the wildest night at sea. Denizens of the Dry Dock drift in and out as the bar begins to swell with rounds of drinks and tales that increase in drama. NO writing, marks or tears. Tight spine, bright pages. 200 pages. Synopsis This wonderfully written memoir about a man, his dog, and their journey together is as revealing about life as it is warm and amusing. The author, Joseph Monninger, is the kind of man who "feels a connection with an animal beyond what others might consider normal." When his dog, a golden retriever named Nellie, develops lumps that are most likely cancer, the forty-year-old author refuses to abandon her to the animal hospital; instead, he takes her on a final road trip through the West to visit their old mountain haunts and fish their favorite trout streams. As they wend their way through Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, the author rediscovers the pleasures of fishing and hiking and also rediscovers his past. The memories of Nellie and what she has seen him through weave together with their outdoor adventures to create a poignant meditation on life, freedom, love, and nature. . Hard Cover. Joe and Me : An Education in Fishing and Friendship

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Rob Weisbach Books , 1997 When James Prosek was just fifteen, a ranger named Joe Haines caught him fishing without a permit in a stream near Prosek's home in Connecticut. But instead of taking off with his fishing buddy, James put down his rod and surrendered. It was a move that would change his life forever. Expecting a small fine and a lecture, James instead received enough knowledge about fishing and the great outdoors to last a lifetime. The story of an unlikely friendship, Joe and Me is a book for those who remember the mentor in their life, the one who changed the way they look at the world. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Game Wars: The Undercover Pursuit of Wildlife Poachers
|

|
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Viking Press, 1991 Very-good condition. NO clippings. Small remainder mark on bottom. Tight spine, bright pages. NO writing, marks or tears inside book. 294 pages. Photographic endpapers. Publishers Weekly Reisner ( Cadillac Desert ) here gives a colorful, action-packed account of three elaborate U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service undercover operations that halted illegal trade in alligator hides, walrus ivory and sacalait (crappie, a fish much favored by southerners). His chief character is agent Dave Hall of the New Orleans office, who masterminds covert operations from Louisiana swamplands to New York City warehouses, from Alaska to Hawaii. Reisner accompanied Hall and David Tullos of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on the sacalait case; he met one of Hall's reformed outlaws, A. J. Caro, who infiltrated poaching gangs. There are stories of undercover stings, massive corruption and wild drives across the country. In the final section, Reisner converses with Hall on environmental subjects--the loss of habitat, poaching and pollution. This is a great good guys-bad guys adventure. (Apr.) Library Journal Poaching is a term usually associated with illicit hunting and trade of wild animals in Third World countries. In this page-turner of a book, Reisner, author of Cadillac Desert ( LJ 8/86), introduces readers to the lucrative American black market in wildlife contraband and to the undercover Fish and Wildlife Service agents who are battling poachers. He dogs the heels of special agent Dave Hall into the Louisiana swamps where Hall infiltrates an alligator smuggling ring. He also describes Hall's attempt to bring down the Alaskan ivory trade and reveals the magnitude of fish poaching in the South. Reisner concludes with a history of the abuse of American wildlife resources that makes one wonder how it could have been allowed to happen. This lively, fast-paced tale of corruption, greed, and poaching at home is highly recommended for public library collections.-- Edell Marie Peters, Brookfield P.L., Wis. . Hard Cover.
