Ghostrider One

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Pocket Books, 1995. From Kirkus Reviews Authentic scenes of aerial combat, land battles, and shipboard support distinguish a businesslike novel about Navy and Marine fliers during Vietnam's Tet Offensive. Sensibly sticking to the serviceable prose of his previous North S.A.R. (1991), decorated Naval aviator Carroll provides plenty of the real-life detail that separates good war stories from technoglitz as he takes a small group of fliers through a few action-filled weeks in l968. Commander Jim Hogan is at the center of things, landing on the American aircraft carrier Shiloh for a hitch as executive officer of squadron of attack bombers just as his injured predecessor is flown out. Hogan discovers within hours that the squadron is badly demoralized after too many months under the command of an unimaginative, risk-averse careerist. His chance to fix things comes sooner than he is ready. The unsatisfactory commanding officer is slated for removal as soon as the Shiloh's top brass see that Hogan, a natural leader and flier, has the right stuff even if he hasn't had the requisite training time for the job. The squadron, grateful for a boss who understands aerial warfare better than bureaucratic battle (which he handles well enough to get his men out of a scrape), quickly shows the commander that they can bomb the daylights out of anything. While Hogan smoothes things over on the carrier, his old chum Major Dick Averitt, a Marine aviator, sticks to the ground at Khe Sanh, where he is supposed to observe and advise the ground troops. Clear and Present Danger
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 1990. Amazon review At the end of the prologue to Clear and Present Danger, Clancy writes, "And so began something that had not quite begun and would not soon end, with many people in many places moving off in directions and on missions which they all mistakenly thought they understood. That was just as well. The future was too fearful for contemplation, and beyond the expected, illusory finish lines were things fated by the decisions made this morning--and, once decided, best unseen." In Clear and Present Danger nothing is as clear as it may seem. The president, unsatisfied with the success of his "war on drugs," decides that he wants some immediate success. But after John Clark's covert strike team is deployed to Colombia for Operation Showboat, the drug lords strike back taking several civilian casualties. The chief executive's polls plummet. He orders Ritter to terminate their unofficial plan and leave no traces. Jack Ryan, who has just been named CIA deputy director of intelligence is enraged when he discovers that has been left out of the loop of Colombian operations. Several of America's most highly trained soldiers are stranded in an unfinished mission that, according to all records, never existed. Ryan decides to get the men out. Ultimately, Clear and Present Danger is about good conscience, law, and politics, with Jack Ryan and CIA agent John Clark as its dual heroes. Ryan relentlessly pursues what he knows is right and legal, even if it means confronting the president of the United States. Clark is the perfect soldier, but a man who finally holds his men higher than the orders of any careless commander. ISBN: 0425122123. Lt Spine lines/gently read/no Stamps. Mass Market Paperback. Balance of Power

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 2002. (Op-Center Ser., No. 5) Reviewer: A reader Op-Center: Balance of Power is a good book that ties up the Op-Center series. Trouble arises when Op-Center agent Martha Mackall is gunned down in Spain on her way to a political meeting. This causes disturbance that turns to fear when a Spanish dictator who has gained a lot of power suddenly takes over a key part of the government and army. Op-Center is left with one obvious choice: Catch, if possible, Martha Mackall's assasins and to infilirate the Spanish dictator's base. From there they will have to try an almost futile attempt to bring the dictator out of power. Balance of Power is an excellent book that concludes the Op-Center series. The Burning Mountain
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 1984. Reviewer: A reader from Texas - A well-written alternative history by a science-fiction writer, this is the best of the fictionalized accounts of Operation Downfall. It skips over Operation Olympic (the invasion of Kyushu)and concentrates upon Operation Coronet (the invasion of the main island of Honshu). The emphasis upon a somewhat limited cast of characters, while necessary for dramatic effect, in a sense glosses over the horrific cost of the planned invasion of Japan. Potential American casualties were estimated at about a million, with four to ten million Japanese deaths. It is all too easy to forget that the estimated 180,000 deaths at Hiroshima and Nagasaki literally saved the lives of millions. This book paints a gory portrait of what might have been, and the horrors that the atomic bombs actually prevented.. ISBN: 0441089356. Lt Spine lines/edge rubs/tight Clean. Mass Market Paperback. Reviewer: melreads from Alexandria, VA - The book is the first in a series of two Civil War novels, depicting the relationship of two brothers, one fighting for the South and one fighting for the North. Each brother is dealing with an overbearing father and a shocking death that initiated their separation from their home in New Jersey. Each brother, over time, is able to discover who they are and who they want to be, despite their beginnings, as they take part in a deadly war. The Glass Blowers

Pocket, 1964. Reviewer: A reader - Daphne du Maurier has written a very moving, fictionalised account of her family during the time of the French Revolution. The historical detail is fascinating, and the family relationships are marvelously done. You can "hear" the voices of the characters, smell the smoke from the glass house and from the guns in war, feel the pain of loss, and the bittersweet quality of victory and reunion. The Price of Victory

Bergenfield, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Signet, 1993. From Kirkus Reviews - In this crackerjack first novel of military justice--in and out of the courtroom--Capt. Jack Hayes, assigned to defend Sgt. Billy Frazier on charges of massive drug selling, probes patiently for the weak links in the prosecution's case: the alleged Amsterdam connection denies knowing Frazier; one of the Army's two witnesses against Frazier, an admitted dealer who's testifying for a reduced sentence, gets blown up before he can take the stand; and the surviving witness, Lt. Robert McCormick, is a pumped-up soldier of fortune, a stone killer already doing 99 years for simulating a terrorist attack (with real bombs and bullets) in order to prep his men for war with Russia. Jack realizes his case won't be won on the evidence, though, but on the whims of the skeptical jury and the rulings and interpretations of Judge DiMarco (dubbed ``the Whopper'' for his gigantic sentences); and he doesn't foresee a rebuttal witness who can trash his defense in ten minutes, a witness who'll force him to a strategy that could land him in jail along with his client. Just about perfect in its control of the ebb and flow of each scene, and of Jack's conduct of the case as a whole: must reading for fans of courtroom drama. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Bantam, 1965. The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature Novel by John Hersey, published in 1944 and awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1945. The novel's action takes place during World War II after the occupation of Sicily by Allied forces. Major Victor Joppolo, an American army officer of Italian descent, is part of the Allied military government ruling the town of Adano. In his attempts to reform the town and bring democracy to the people by treating them with respect and decency, Joppolo comes into conflict with his commanding officer, a hard-nosed general who eventually has Joppolo transferred because of his refusal to follow orders. Joppolo's concern for the town is epitomized by his efforts to replace a bell that the fascists had melted down to use for ammunition.. Cvr Aged/tan pgs/foxing/tight/age Odor. Mass Market Paperback.
