1) The Steel, the Mist, and the Blazing Sun"
Anvil, Christopher

The Steel, the Mist, and the Blazing Sun
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Ace Books, 1986. Reviewer - Julia: - Written by one of Campbell's Analog "golden age" authors, this is a tale of US/Russian conflict that continues in the remnants of civilization. It is good old fashioned space opera-a little neive and dated but full of action with a sprinkling of humor. This story has an "aw shucks", hillbilly flavor, that is a nice constrast to many of the "angst" ridden novels written today. To my mind, this is the least of Anvil's works. His Horsip (Pandora's Planet)and Space Patrol (Strangers in Paradise and Worlord's World) stories are much more enjoyable and would appeal to readers of James Schmidt, H. Beam Piper, or Sharon Lee/Steven Miller.. ISBN: 0441785727. Readers copy/creased/other Flaws. Mass Market Paperback. Fair. Paperback Thriller. (more information)

10) Fat Tuesday
Brown, Sandra

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Warner Books, Incorporated, 2002. From Amazon: - After a gruff 'n' tuff New Orleans narc, Burke Basile, mistakenly blows a hole in his partner's noggin, he vows revenge--not only on the thug who was directly involved, but also on the sleazy kingpin behind it all. And in finest cop-drama tradition, he vows to do it outside the law. Fat Tuesday only begins to cook after Basile turns in his badge and--mixing charm and coercion--enlists various underworld elements in his cause. It's all a little B movie-ish at times, but for every hooker with a heart of gold, there's a fresher character like Gregory, the homosexual hustler who uses his drama degree to Basile's benefit. The villains are bad (can't go wrong with a lawyer), the heroine good, and the hero a big, wounded warrior looking for true love. What's not to like?. Spine lines/edge rubs/Tight Clean. Carcaterra, Lorenzo

Apaches
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Ballantine Publishing Group, 1998. Reviewer: from Magnolia, Texas USA The plot is simple and yet exciting. A gang--cadre--team--of six of NYPD's best cops, all disabled in the course of duty, come together with a restraunteur who has links to the mob in order to bring down the Queen Bee of all drug lords (ladies?). Each of the six protagonists has a rich and detailed past, and we are introduced to them individually in depth before the main action begins. Then Boomer and Dead-Eye (yes, everybody has a nickname) take on a hopeless case and emerge, not only victorious, but feeling alive because they are COPS again. The rest of the group joins them, and Boomer outlines the plan. They will defeat the Empress of evil, a drug dealer so bad, her only good point is that she pays her gym bill on time. From the moment our team forms, the plot moves lightening fast to its conclusion. The action is great, the detail is satisfying, the dialogue snappy. The characters have their own story, each credulous, each powerful.. Tight/clean/no Stamps/gently Read. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. (more information)

Kerry McGrath had only begun to work in the county prosecutor's office at the time of the infamous "Sweetheart Murder Case," yet she remembers being impressed by both the ability her new boss, Frank Green, displayed in successfully pursuing the conviction, and the general ineptness of the defense counsel. 27) Isle of Dogs
Cornwell, Patricia

Isle of Dogs
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 2002. Amazon Review - Isle of Dogs is a comic romp, a real departure for this author. It does center around a couple of characters from past books--police chief Judy Hammer and reporter-turned-cop Andy Brazil of Hornet's Nest and Southern Cross. But the plot, style, and tone will remind you more of Carl Hiaasen's dark comedies. The madcap doings get underway when the addled, nearly blind governor of Virginia confusedly launches a speed-trap program on isolated Tangier Island, whose prickly, eccentric residents promptly attempt secession. Cornwell adeptly interweaves other crisscrossing plot lines involving a gang of street-stupid thugs gunning for Hammer and Brazil, an angel-faced serial killer, a kidnapped dog, and more.. Isle of Dogs
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 2002. Be aware: this is not your typical Patricia Cornwell novel. 29) Hornet's Nest
Cornwell, Patricia

Hornet's Nest
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 1998. Reviewer: A reader - Cornwell has shown the rest of the vanguard of women mystery writers the way with this one. The parodic gender reversals alone bring stunning clarity to sex-typing in genre fiction, including her own Kay Scarpetta mysteries. Look at young Andy Brazil. He could be any ingenue in a Hollywood film, a mystery, or romance novel, except that he's male. Chief Hammer and Deputy Chief West, names wonderfully parodic (not satiric--read Linda Hutcheon), have the kind of personal magnetism and powerful leverage of the best males in the field, including the new breed represented on TV in NYPD Blue, for example, and in the classics of police procedurals. Cornwell brilliantly teases us with our own trite and formulaic expectations and breaks us free of them while still giving us enough of the familiar field to enjoy the read..
