Singin' and swingin' and gettin' Merry Like Christmas
Bantam, 1979. Book Description - In this third self-contained volume of her autobiography, which began with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou moves into the adult world, and the white world as well, as she marries, enters show business, and tours Europe and Africa in Porgy and Bess. As the book opens, Maya, in order to support herself and her young son, gets a job in a record shop run by a white woman. Suspicious of almost any kindness shown her, she is particularly confused by the special attentions of a young white customer. Soon the relationship grows into love and then marriage, and Maya believes a permanent relationship is finally possible. But it is not to be, and she is again forced to look for work. This time she finds a job as a dancer in a sleazy San Francisco bar. Her remarkable talent, however, soon brings her attention of a different kind, and before long she is singing in one of the most popular nightclubs on the coast. From there, she is called to New York to join the cast of Porgy and Bess, which is just about to begin another tour abroad. The troupe's joyous and dramatic adventure through Italy, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Egypt becomes the centerpiece of Singin' and Swingin'. This remarkable portrayal of one of the most exciting and talented casts ever put together, and of the encounters between these larger-than-life personalities and audiences who had rarely seen black people before, makes a hilarious and poignant story.. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Bantam Books, 1983. Amazon In this first of five volumes of autobiography, poet Maya Angelou recounts a youth filled with disappointment, frustration, tragedy, and finally hard-won independence. Sent at a young age to live with her grandmother in Arkansas, Angelou learned a great deal from this exceptional woman and the tightly knit black community there. These very lessons carried her throughout the hardships she endured later in life, including a tragic occurrence while visiting her mother in St. Louis and her formative years spent in California--where an unwanted pregnancy changed her life forever. Marvelously told, with Angelou's "gift for language and observation," this "remarkable autobiography by an equally remarkable black woman from Arkansas captures, indelibly, a world of which most Americans are shamefully ignorant. Almost Golden : Jessica Savitch & the Selling of Television News
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Morrow/Avon, 1989. Reviewer: rickz - First of all, it is a history of the selling of TV news; with all of the familiar and unfamiliar names in that business. Stories of now major star when they were first starting out. The sequences of presidents and vice-presidents in the Networks. This may be turget prose to soap-opera fans attracted to the book by the beauty on the cover, but it was interesting to me. Secondly, it is the agonizing history of Jessica Savitch, obsessively driven to be the queen of Network News, privately anguished by memories of her father, who let her down by dying when she was 12 (he was 31), and more publically tortured by a long distructive co-dependent relationship with Ron Kershaw, another TV news luminary, and the scorn of her co-workers, who hated her self-centered focus on her success.. Old Tappan, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Touchstone Books, 2000. Book Description - For generations of resolute adventurers, from George Mallory to Sir Edmund Hillary to Jon Krakauer, Mount Everest and the world's other greatest peaks have provided the ultimate testing ground. But the question remains: Why climb? In High Exposure, elite mountaineer and acclaimed Everest filmmaker David Breashears answers with an intimate and captivating look at his life. For Breashears, climbing has never been a question of risk taking: Rather, it is the pursuit of excellence and a quest for self-knowledge. Danger comes, he argues, when ambition blinds reason. Is Elvis Alive?
Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A.: Tudor Publishing, Incorporated, 1988. Reviewer: A reader I've never been a fan of consipiracy theories, and am in fact quite the cynic. So when I was given this book as a gift, it was sometime before I even picked it up to read it. Wow, I'm sure glad I finally did! I never read Orion (apparently the author's first novel), but the facts included in this book and the conversation on the tape are just incredible. I didn't think the author was trying to make us believe anything, rather she just presented the facts surrounding Elvis' death and allowed the reader to come to his own conclusion. My conclusion after reading this book twice is that, if Elvis really did die in Aug 1977, there sure was a huge cover-up of some sort on the part of his family, friends, and business associates. Too many things just didn't fit, and the question would be "WHY NOT?". I would recommend this book to anyone with an open mind.. ISBN: 0944276318. Spinelines/edgerubs/tight Tanning Pgs. Dog Heart: A Memoir
Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1999. From Library Journal - South African poet and novelist Breytenbach (The Memory of Birds in Times of Revolution) presents an unusual memoir composed of seemingly unrelated sketches and memories. Returning to his homeland from France, where he has lived since being released from prison in 1982 (he had been sentenced as a member of the anti-apartheid African National Congress), Breytenbach goes to Bonnieville, his birthplace; the town and its environs trigger a flood of memories about his childhood, especially his connection to nature and the various people who inhabited his world. Making only a few tangential references to race, Breytenbach writes more as mystical lyricist than as a polemicist with an ax to grind. Beautifully written, if somewhat confusing. AAnthony O. All the Best, George Bush: My Life in Letters and Other Writings
Old Tappan, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Scribner's, 2000. From Publishers Weekly - To the present governors of Texas and Florida, his sons George and Jeb, who worried that they might upstage their famous dad, former President Bush wrote: "Do not worry when you see the stories that compare you favorably to a Dad for whom English was a second language." President Bush was indeed famously inarticulate in public. But in this collection of diary entries, memos and letters written between 1942, when he started navy flight school, to March 1999, when he wrote a friend to express his consternation that his e-mail server was down, Bush proves himself to have been a gracious and staggeringly prolific correspondent. There are long letters, such as the September 1944 missive to his parents relating how he was shot down over the Pacific. And there are truly funny diary entries from his presidency about the Scowcroft Award, a running gag in the Bush cabinet named after National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft, who apparently had an uncanny knack for napping in meetings: "A fantastic challenge by Ed Derwinski. very firm eye closure and a remarkable recovery gambit." Naturally, there are long letters to world leaders such as Deng Xiaoping, King Hussein, Mikhail Gorbachev and others about matters of historical import. Diary entries cover the Tiananmen Square massacre, the failed coup against Gorbachev, the Gulf War and other crises (though there's hardly anything about the Iran-contra scandal). Rarely does Bush display any partisan bitterness, and even then it's not very pungent (though he's consistently irked by the press). Bush must have been tempted to write a memoir intended to beat historians to the interpretive punch. This modest alternative is refreshing and, in many ways, will shed more light on the man's personal character and public persona than any memoir or biography could. It offers an intriguing picture of a man who takes fierce pride in his modesty. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.--. ISBN: 0743200411. Brand New /Rem Mark Bot Edge. Trade Paperback. New. Their involvements since the presidency have ranged from writing their memoirs and building the Carter Presidential Library to extensive work with the poor. Some of these vignettes seem like leftovers from their more important books while others sound preachy, e.g., tips on proper nutrition and exercise. My Life
Vintage Book, 2004. From Booklist - It's clear that Bill Clinton wrote this book himself; his personality shines from every page. Those aspects of his character that people liked during his political career are much in evidence here: his optimism, his inquiring mind, and his prodigious grasp of issues. And all the things that raised the public's ire about him are present, too: his tendency to parse words and situations, his self-serving take on events, the wounded psyche that led to irresponsible behavior. It is also clear that Clinton saw this book as his opportunity to shape the debate about his legacy. At this task, he both succeeds and fails. Certainly, he gives a more complete picture of who he is and the forces that have shaped him. His description of his early years is perhaps the best part of the book. Readers see both the boy and the segregated southern society in which he came of age. Equally intriguing is his description of the tumultuous events during the Lewinsky years: he holds himself accountable for his actions but reserves his venom for Kenneth Starr. In between these compelling parts, however, the reader is confronted with a numbing cavalcade of names and events. Clinton also has the unfortunate habit of describing incidents and almost reflexively linking them to a future legislative effort (a neighbor's illness when he was a child led to health-care reform when he was president). It's also odd how delicately he treats certain people with whom he must have been extremely angry (the prostitute-loving pollster Dick Morris, for example). In the end, Clinton's life story probably will function like a supersized Rorschach test. Most readers will find just what they're looking for. --Ilene Cooper Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved. ISBN: 140003003x. Beautiful Brand New/No Marks. Trade Paperback. The Barbara Mandrell Story
E Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Berkley Pub Group, 1989. From Publishers Weekly: - The merchandising of a country-music star who has prevailed over the market whims of nearly 30 years and whose private life is a model of probity exceptional in the entertainment world is followed in this respectful biography. Barbara Mandrell is pictured as a hard worker, always on the move, devoted to family, energized by religious commitmenta picture drawn with broad strokes. Yet, "beneath the somewhat Pollyanna exterior is a core of smooth steel," notes her biographer, who suggests that this may account for her triumph over a near-fatal auto accident in 1984 that maimed her, injured her children and killed the driver of the other car. The arduous work of physical and emotional recovery ended in success, which Mandrell attributes to religious faith and family. The author emphasizes the singer's unique relationship with her multitudes of fans, nurtured by her own museum, a popular stop on the Nashville music tour.. ISBN: 0425114104. Swimming To Antarctica: Tales Of A Long-distance Swimmer
Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.: Harvest Books, 2005. Product Description: Now in paperback, with photos and maps added especially for this new edition, here is the acclaimed life story of a woman whose drive and determination inspire everyone she touches. Lynne Cox started swimming almost as soon as she could walk. By age sixteen, she had broken all records for swimming the English Channel. Her daring eventually led her to the Bering Strait, where she swam five miles in thirty-eight-degree water in just a swimsuit, cap, and goggles. In between those accomplishments, she became the first to swim the Strait of Magellan, narrowly escaped a shark attack off the Cape of Good Hope, and was cheered across the twenty-mile Cook Strait of New Zealand by dolphins. She even swam a mile in the Antarctic. Lynne writes the same way she swims, with indefatigable spirit and joy, and shares the beauty of her time in the water with a poet's eye for detail. She has accomplished yet another feat--writing a new classic of sports memoir. ISBN: 0156031302. Brand New/bot Corner Crimp & Curl. Trade Paperback. New. more information

Memory Slips: A Memoir of Music and Healing
Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: Harpercollins Pub, 1997. From Amazon: - Concert pianists perform from memory, a brutal but inescapable convention of musical life. Of all the demons they face onstage, none is greater than the fear of a memory slip. Cutting's bitter, dignified memoir tells the story of a musical life nearly shipwrecked by childhood molestation at the hands of her minister father. Beginning with a terrifying slip that triggers the gradual breakdown of a successful concert career, the narrative moves through hospitalization, painfully recovered childhood memories, and finally, a struggle toward compassionate understanding and a truce with the past. Throughout, she weaves the powerful theme of music: as a bribe, an addiction, a joy, and an escape.. ISBN: 0060187301. Brand New/Dust Jacket Rubs/remainder Mrk. Hard Cover. New/Very Good. Resurrection: The Confirmation of Clarence Thomas
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Viking Press, 1994. In a book whose title suggests strong religious symbolism, Senator John Danforth (R-Mo.), who is also an ordained Episcopal priest, recounts the battle, both public and private, political and personal, that ensued over Clarence Thomas's nomination to the Supreme Court. Writing from the perspective of a personal friend as well as a political sponsor of Judge Thomas, Danforth details what he interpreted to be a well-orchestrated attempt to destroy Thomas's nomination and perhaps the man himself. According to Danforth, he himself was almost destroyed by his own angry response to Thomas's foes. This particular confirmation battle will be analyzed for decades to come, from numerous angles and with competing conclusions. At times moving, Danforth's insider account often reveals Danforth's rage and questionable tactics as much as anything else. His "spin" on the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill affair won't persuade everyone, but his honesty about his own behavior is refreshing. Danforth's work will appeal particularly to readers interested in the relationship between political behavior and religious faith.. ISBN: 0670860220. DJ Edge wear/litely bumped Corners. Hard Cover. Quiet Passion: A Biography of Senator Bob Graham
Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.: J P Tarcher, 2004. He is a three-term U.S. Senator and a former chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee known for his quiet manner -- until he raged at his fellow senators that they would have "blood on their hands" if they voted to approve the U.S. military intervention in Iraq. In 2003, he briefly sought the presidency and after his withdrawal was considered a leading contender for the vice presidency or a cabinet post in a Democratic administration. He was a two-term governor of Florida, where he revolutionized public education, slashed property taxes, launched major "Save Our Rivers" and "Save Our Coasts" efforts, and oversaw sixteen executions -- establishing himself as an independent thinker not hamstrung by the party line. He is brother-in-law to the late Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and is a Harvard-educated millionaire who has worked as mechanic, bellboy, chicken plucker, nursing home aide, and policeman, and held hundreds of other ordinary jobs in order to immerse himself in the lives of his constituents.. Palace: My Life in the Royal Family of Monaco

E Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Berkley Pub Group, 1989. From Publishers Weekly: - The late Princess Grace is among the few members of Monaco's sovereign family who escape De Massy's harsh criticism. With Higham's help, the baron relates accounts of the attempted constrictions placed on his life by a cold, demanding mother, Princess Antoinette, Prince Rainier's sister. The story abounds with machinations as seen from De Massy's perspective: Grace's wedding, and the bride's harassment by palace intrigue and slights to her American family; Antoinette's attempts to usurp her brother's throne. Of more interest are details on daily life in the principality, Grace's contributions to its flourishing amenities and the political climate. But such data are merely background for the baron's main topic: rejection by his mother and uncle. Apparently, the royal nephew doesn't link his sorry status to the rakehell career he recalls with more relish than rue.. ISBN: 0425117766. Spine Lines/edge rubs/Tilt/clean. Mass Market Paperback. The Ragman's Son

Richmond Hill, ON, Canada: Distican, Incorporated, 1989. From Publishers Weekly: Recalling a breakfast at the White House, Douglas marvels that a ragman's son is invited to eat scrambled eggs with the President, himself a Georgia farmer. Only in Americaor so this celebrity would have it, endlessly extolling his love of country as he recounts his government-sponsored goodwill missions around the world. Still, one can't fault him for his cloying patriotismhe is by no means a reactionaryor for pride in his achievements, this child of unlettered Jewish-Russian immigrants, the only son among seven offspring, raised in grueling poverty in upstate New York, who supported himself through college and acting school, became a considerable star and a millionaire. The most affecting memories here are of those early years and the son's relationship with the father, a heavy drinker and violent man; the most tedious,. tight/clean/spine lines/name Inside.
