Bantam Books, 1980. Reviewer: from Canada The main protagonist, a middle-aged Electric Utility Executive, beds everyone from a feminist reporter, a recent widower, to a disabled woman. All the while his wife is suffering from cancer. Talk about misogynistic melodrama. The few snippets here and there of the fascinating world of electric power generation/consumption, politics and the environment is all lost in a hazy summer smog. The antagonists, a motley crew of demented terrorist, only lend further to the cheesy, soap-opera quality of the book's narrative.. Spine line/tilt/edge rubs/tight Lt Tan P. Mass Market Paperback. The Diamond Waterfall
New York: Signet, 1985. Lily Greene, beautiful star of the musical comedy theatre in the late 19th century, marries extremely wealthy Sir Robert Firth, thinking that she was marrying a man who was not only generous, but who matched her passionate nature. He'd respected her virtue before marriage, saying that he wanted to keep her until they were legally wed, but on the wedding night, and on all the nights that followed, he showed himself to be a warped man who could only perform sexually if the woman was humiliated in front of him by being stripped naked and bedecked with his famous Diamond Waterfall necklace and dozens of other pieces of jewellery. He then proceeded to rape, using the metal and stones of the settings to cut and bruise the flesh. Their marriage was regarded publicly as successful but, as with other women of this era, Lily had no option but to keep up a good front and to pretend that nothing was wrong. This story spans three generations of the Firth family from late in the 19th century and through two world wars, ending in 1947. It's a fascinating glimpse into the morals and mores of these eras, with the odd illegitimate child, brutal husbands, less than perfect wives and travels from England to Rumania, France and Italy. The horrors of war and its aftermaths are well covered and make for graphic if not pleasant reading. - An Amazon Reviewer. Spinelines/stamp/tanning pg/tight. Mass Market Paperback. New York, New York, U.S.A.: Pocket Books, 1979. Joseph Heller is probably the only writer who could always make me laugh out loud. This is a book about a college professor and writer who gets a chance to go to Washington to work for the President. An old friend of his works at the White House and invites him to come to work there, but won't tell him what the job is or when he can start. The friend tells Gold that they want to make a big announcement about the appointment, but want to keep it secret. Everything this guy says is an oxymoron. Meanwhile, his family is driving him crazy. His father and step mother live in Florida during the winters, but come back to New York for the summer. The whole family is anxious for them to go back to Florida, but they keep stalling. Gold's brother makes idiotic comments, egging him on constantly. Gold is always being put into a position where he can either argue and look like he's showing off, or ignore the comment and be criticized for ignoring the mistake in his brother's comment. Her Father's Daughter

Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: Harpercollins Pub, 1991. Reviewer: Victoria - From beginning to end Herrington does a wonderful job of taking us inside the lives of the "new" rich. It's a story of a single father who pits his daughters against each other in a fight for the empire he has built. In doing so he finds that after years of brow-beating and criticism he will lose a daughter to vindictiveness, one to alcohol, and one to an arch old enemy. The book is a page turner and doesn't disappoint. It's full of love, hate, adultery, forgiveness, and self determination.. Spine lines/stamp/edgerubs/tight. Mass Market Paperback. Mrs. Dewinter

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Morrow/Avon, 1994. What happened to Maxim de Winter and his second wife after Manderley burned? This suspenseful "completion" of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca begins with the couple's return to England, following a ten-year, self-imposed exile, for the funeral of Maxim's sister Beatrice. In a voice true to the original story, Hill's Mrs. de Winter chronicles Rebecca's continuing shadow on their life: a mysterious wreath bearing a card with the initial "R" is discovered near Beatrice's grave, and unwelcome visitors include Jack Favell, who has visions of blackmail, and Mrs. Danvers, who seeks revenge. The narrator's happiness with Maxim is threatened by his first wife's invasive presence. Can she protect him from the past, or will Rebecca's murder be avenged? Sure to please du Maurier fans, this is highly recommended for public libraries. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/93. - Heather Blenkinsopp, Mercy Coll. Smilla's Sense of Snow
Toronto, ON, Canada: Dell Distributing, 1994. Book Description: A stunning literary thriller in the tradition of Gorky Park and the novels of John Le Carré. Smilla Qaaviqaaq Jaspersen is the daughter of a Danish doctor and an Inuit woman from Greenland. Raised in Greenland, she lives in Copenhagen and, as befits her ancestry, is an expert on snow. When one of her few friends, an Inuit boy, dies under mysterious circumstances, she refuses to believe it was an accident. She decides to investigate and discovers that even the police don't want her involved. But Smilla persists, and as snow-covered Copenhagen settles down for a quiet Christmas, Smilla's investigation leads her from a fanatically religious accountant, to a tough-talking pathologist, to the secret files of the Danish company responsible for extracting most of Greenland's mineral wealth. Finally, she boards a ship with an international cast of villains - and a large stash of cocaine - bound for a mysterious mission on an inhospitable island off Greenland.. Ambitions

Mcmillan, 1987. How enjoyable to find a lively, lusty historical novel (Victorian England), with two engaging and believable heroines, without any of the stridency of some recent women's fiction. Howard lets her story tell itself, with plenty of plot, fortunes to be made, and a wealth of villains to overcome. Lacy Hemingway, rich and beautiful, and her maid Rachel O'Malley, survivor of a desperately impoverished Irish household, find their lives entangled after Lacy's impetuousness has caused her to be disowned. The two create a thriving shipping business andof courseare rivals only in love. The mid-1800s, both in England and abroad, are vividly sketched as background to this fast-moving romance. The contrast of vast power and degrading poverty is balanced and controlled by the author's sure command of her story. - From Library Journal. Spine curve/lines/stamp/tilt/rubs/tight. E Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.: New Amer Library, 1987. No one is more surprised than Sam Sheridan when he receives an inheritance of 100 acres of Texas brush land from Able Patmana man he has never met. Intrigued, Sam and his bride leave Kansas City in 1921 and encounter an icy reception in Dane, home of the influential Spence and Patman families. Sam teams up with an old cowboy and a taciturn Choctaw and, later, when they discover oil, timid Sam is transformed into a force bent on revenge against Pete Spence for past injustices. This is really two stories in onethat of Sam and of Able Patmantwo strong-willed men who carve their empires in the Texas prairie. This entertaining and well-written novel paints a vivid portrait of Texas life in the late 19th century and of the development of the East Texas oil fields. - From Library Journal.. ISBN: 0451148010. The Klansman
Dell, 1968. Reviewer: Jfrom Eastern Washington, United States Huie, now deceased, writes a very exciting novel about a Klan-ridden Alabama community during the timeframe of the civil rights movement. I haven't ever been to Alabama, so I can't honestly say whether or not it was at all reflective of small-town situations in that state during the late 1960s. However, the picture it paints is not terribly dissimilar from those I've seen in non-fiction writing about the period. The language is harsh and the scenes are described with shocking vividness; this book isn't for the faint of heart and contains a lot more sorrrow than joy. Such were the times. However, it does present a wide cross-section of interesting characters, and avoids painting a picture of complete good vs. complete evil--just about all the characters display faults and redeeming qualities, rather than a cast of nothing but saintly, unselfish civil rights workers or hog-nosed adder-mean racists. It doesn't take deep reading of this book to see how racial prejudice is often manipulated as a power tool.. Spine slice/ege rub/lines/tilt/bk Cvr Tr. Mass Market Paperback. A Widow for One Year
New York: Ballantine, 2001. Trade Paperback - Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character--a "difficult" woman. By no means is she conventionally "nice," but she will never be forgotten. Ruth's story is told in three parts, each focusing on a crucial time in her life. When we first meet her--on Long Island, in the summer of 1958--Ruth is only four. The second window into Ruth's life opens in the fall of 1990, when Ruth is an unmarried woman whose personal life is not nearly as successful as her literary career. She distrusts her judgment in men, for good reason. A Widow for One Year closes in the autumn of 1995, when Ruth Cole is a forty-one-year-old widow and mother. She's about to fall in love for the first time. Richly comic, as well as deeply disturbing A Widow for One Year is a multilayered love story of astonishing emotional force. Both ribald and erotic, it is also a brilliant novel about the passage of time and the relentlessness of grief.. Gently Read/store stamp/clean/tight. Mass Market Paperback. Good. more information

Essentially the story revolves around the lives of two women, a mother (Liz) and her daughter (Sage), their experiences of hardships and turmoil, of great sacrifice, tragedy and rejection, and of course, wonderful (and sometimes forbidden) love. What I found most impressive was that Jordan so effectively and seemingly effortlessly moved through time. She not only presents the story of Liz and Sage in the present, but interweaves the story of Liz as a brave young women into this, a story painstakingly documented in Liz'z diaries. Jordan takes, not only these two women, but a host of other characters, and creates and develops lives and personalities so real, it feels as if they are actual people and not fictitious characters from a book. I enjoyed this book tremendously. I have read it several times, and still enjoy paging through it. The Hidden Years is a novel that I whole-heartedly reccommend.. splines/tilt/hinge crs/stamp/bk Cvr Crs. Mass Market Paperback. Acceptable. more information

Moviola

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Pocket Books, 1980. It was quite an epic tale that chronicles the history of motion pictures in America and of one man's survival in the business. I recall reading another book by Garson Canin that talked about working with Samuel Goldwyn and the stories that Goldwyn would tell Canin turn up in this book so it came across as a loosely biographical/fictional account of his life beginning with the Nickelodeons, Immigrants in New York and the common theme of the American Dream. It is a vast tale that is told from a number of different perspectives which can be a little distracting at times, and you see how a person is knocked down, keeps going, and is all too human. Plus it has every person in Hollywood who ever existed. It is like a Mike Todd all-star cast in book form. Anything that could happen does and one is left exhausted after the tale. I suggest this to those who love anything old Hollywood, the behind the scenes, and multi-generational stories. An Amazon Reviewer.. Spinelines/edge rubs/tanning pgs/tite. Mass Market Paperback. Lake Wobegon Days

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Viking Penguin, 1986. Reviewer: Jerald from Clinton Township, MI United States For anyone raised in a small Midwestern town, as I was, this book is fascinating. It is dryly humorous, and never truly abrasive, as it wends its way through anecdotes of small town life and personal foibles. If you want the meet people, and institutions, that you loved, or scorned, or simply observed in passing, this is your sort of book. You'll remember these folks and their stories a long time after you have forgotten more in-depth characters.. Gently read /edge rubs/tight Clean Pgs. Mass Market Paperback. Good. more information

Leaving Home

E Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.: New Amer Library, 1988. A Collection of Lake Wobegon Stories - "Home," in Keillor's fictional world, is Lake Wobegon (the "Gateway to Central Minnesota"), which the radio humorist introduced in print in Lake Wobegon Days. This collection of stories set in Lake Wobegon is taken from monologues performed on A Prairie Home Companion, Keillor's radio show; each one chronicles some kind of leave-taking or homecoming: trips to Minneapolis, high school graduations, attending the Minnesota State Fair, a waitress quitting her job at the Chatterbox Cafe, a boy joining the army, Father Emil retiring from Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility, family members returning to Lake Wobegon for Christmas. In the last story, from Keillor's final show, the storyteller bids farewell to his beloved hometown. Keillor has a rare gift for celebrating and finding humor in commonplace events, and his affection for his characters and for small-town life shines through. These short narratives survive the transition from performance to print beautifully; they are spare, artfully crafted vignettes that will move readers as well as entertain them. Some tales are wildly hilarious, others gently poignantbut all are simply wonderful. - From Publishers Weekly.. ISBN: 0451821971. Gently read/stamp/clean/tight. Mass Market Paperback. Good.
