While the TV news crews feasted on the scene an Alex began his therapy sessions with the traumatized children, he couldn't escape the image of a slight teenager clutching an oversized rifle. Intrigued by a request from the sniper's father to conduct a "psychological autopsy" of his child, Alex begins to uncover a strange pattern of innocence, neglect, and loss. Then suddenly it is more than a pattern -- it is a trail of blood. In the dead sniper's past was a dark and vicious plot. 17) Dolores Claiborne
King, Stephen

Dolores Claiborne
New York, NY, U.S.A.: N A L, 1993. Amazon More of a mystery than a horror novel, Dolores Claiborne contains only the briefest glances at the supernatural. The novel presents Stephen King as a writer experimenting with style and narrative, time and perspective. Fans looking for a skin-crawling, page-turning fright or an undead bloodbath will be disappointed, but a patient reader willing to savor King's leisurely study of character and island life will find many rewards. And all of this is not to say that the book is without suspense. The story unfolds in one continuous chapter, told in the first person by the cranky, 65-year-old housekeeper, Dolores, who is explaining to police officers and a stenographer how and why she killed her husband, Joe, 30 years ago. At the same time, in her rambling monologue, she insists that she did not kill her longtime employer, Vera Donovan--notwithstanding what the residents of Little Tall Island may be whispering. Joe was a drinker, and, as Dolores gradually argues, he deserved to die for the horrifying crimes he committed against his family. But Vera, despite her cantankerous disposition as a lady governing her decaying estate with her precise rules about even the most mundane household chore ("Six pins! Remember to use six pins! Don't you let the wind blow my good sheets down to the corner of the yard!"), was a good woman--or at least not an evil one. She was the woman who hired the young Dolores and kept her on even after Dolores got pregnant again. Dolores cleaned and cared for her even as the old matron faded into senility. Dolores Claiborne is a rich novel that recalls the regionalist writing of the turn of the century. It is a fine place for a skeptical newcomer--put off by King's reputation for outright terror--to start. And for fans, it is a book that offers new insights into an author who's an old favorite.. Murder in Mendocino
Old Tappan, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Worldwide Library, 1990. From Publishers Weekly - It's rainy season in Northern California, a discouraging time for freelance writer Charlotte Kent to refuse bread-and-butter assignments in order to write a history of her adopted town, Pelican Rock. Charlotte is even more discouraged when she finds someone else in town has begun research for the same project. When that writer is found dead from a shotgun blast and the weapon is traced to Charlotte's young neighbor, the neglected and suddenly missing 12-year-old son of two vestigial hippies, Charlotte begins to worry as well. Continuing work on the book, Charlotte interviews Pelican Rock's established spinster set. Loosened tongues hint at dark secrets about a handsome, oft-wed doctor who mysteriously vanished nearly 60 years earlier. With courage and wit, Charlotte persists in her search for both boy and story, surviving a gunshot wound and a near-burial as she unearths a very modern drug deal with roots deep in the past. Romance and self-determination also figure in the twisting route to the conclusion of this satisfying complex mystery.. ISBN: 0373260555. Lines/tilt/dent cover/lite Tanning Pg. Mass Market Paperback. Love Lies
E Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Kensington Pub Corp, 1995. Fran Meltzer is an assertive, middle-aged English professor at a small Midwestern college, but even her determined sleuthing and beguiling romantic entanglements can't salvage this humdrum suspense tale by the author of No Regrets . Fran's best friend, Julia, is a suspect in the murder of Julia's husband, Tyler, a physical fitness buff and dedicated philanderer whose body has been found in the school gym with a 300-pound barbell across his neck. Who would want to kill Tyler, an impassioned philosophy professor (specializing in ethics) and a highly regarded poet? The picturesque campus, bristling with academic rivalries, provides several suspects: the alcoholic teacher whose tenure is endangered by Tyler's review committee; Tyler's current lover, a student who's nowhere to be found; even his seemingly docile wife, who's enraged by Tyler's latest infidelity--and is also in line to receive a fortune in life insurance upon his death. The kindly and gentle police detective investigating the case forms an immediate bond with Fran; working together, they undertake what regrettably proves to be some extremely low-key detection, interrogating several bland personalities residing in the nearly colorless town. - From Publishers Weekly.. McBain, Ed

Vespers
Dresden, Tennessee, U.S.A.: Avon Books, 1991. An 87th Precinct Novel - this bizarre and gripping novel shows why MWA Grand Master McBain is acclaimed for his stories about police at work in a big city. Detectives Carella and Hawes are investigating the murder of Fr. Birney at St. Catherine's, a church near the headquarters of satanists, which makes them obvious suspects. But Carella and Hawes, hearing different stories from all the people concerned, recognize the enormous task of separating the truth from lies. There are hints that the pastor was being blackmailed; that the black boy he saved from a beating by a gang of white teens, as well as his attackers, are guarding guilty secrets; that a parishioner who quarreled with Birney could be the killer. As usual, the author's uncannily accurate eye and ear make the many characters identifible as real people. Not as usual, however, the solution to this case and related crimes reverberates with the shocks of totally unexpected disclosures. From Publishers Weekly.. spinelines/tilt/edgerubs/tight. Performing as a detective again, Kemp vows to find the person who has killed elderly Rose Aumary, a client he valued as a friend. The police in their suburban town accuse Kevin Roding, the rambunctious young son of Rose's cleaning woman, and the case seems closed when Kevin is found murdered. As executor of Rose's considerable estate, Kemp continues his private investigation, interviewing her snobbish daughter Paula Warrender (so different from the kind, generous mother) and other family members and heirs, including the vicar's feckless sister Tullia Cavendish and her nephew Keith, a swain of Paula's daughter Lettice. Surprised to find Lettice much like her grandmother Rose, the lawyer confides his suspicions to her and, together, they search for clues that eventually solve this uncommonly engrossing mystery. - From Publishers Weekly.. 41) A Tangled Web
Michael, Judith

A Tangled Web
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Pocket Books, 1995. Reviewer: A reader from Cambridge, MA - A Tangled Web gives us an extended view into the lives of Stephanie, Sabrina and Garth. The authors continue with the wonderful character development of twins, Stephanie and Sabrina, who switched places in the first novel, Deceptions. This time, we visit the lovely south of France to learn about Stephanie's struggles with amnesia (yes, another soap opera plot, but well-written). The theme again is how strong the bond between twins can be. The romance between Sabrina and Garth, now husband and wife, is Judith Michael's ode to marriage. The children, Penny and Cliff, complete the domestic scene. There is intrigue on the international scale as Stephanie and Max hide from black market hit men and at the more local level in the scientific community as Garth and Sabrina fight to protect Garth's position as a researcher. Worth the read for descriptions of Provence and character sketches of a fictional European elite, A Tangled Web is a good sequel to Deceptions for those who wanted to share more time with Sabrina and Garth..
