1) The World from Rough Stones
Macdonald, Malcom

The World from Rough Stones
Signet, 1976. Reviewer: A reader - The first in the Stevenson family saga, and the first of Macdonald's many novels. This story is set in very early Victorian England from 1839 to 1841 against a backdrop of railroad building and and the economic upheavals this revolutionary form of transportation caused in it's youngest phase. Nora Telling, a brilliant but impoverished young woman of socially deplorable origins hitches her wagon to the star of John Stevenson, a navvy posessed of highly unusual talents whose own past is mysterious, stimulating to one's curiosity, and never clearly revealed, but not before meeting up in a manner later discomfiting to them both, with John's friend Walter Thornton, engineer and gentleman, who is looking forward to his upcoming marriage to Arabella Paine, Victorian ultra-lady. Each man soon discovers what a gem he (and the other) has taken to wife. The Stevensons start an ascent from poverty by their wits and any other means they can muster, above board or otherwise, while the Thorntons embark on a genteel connubial life.. 8) The Thorn Birds
McCullough, Colleen

The Thorn Birds
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Morrow/Avon, 1978. Reviewer: Melanie from Lafayette, LA - Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds is quite honestly the best book that I have ever read and probably will ever read. This novel made me feel every emotion possible. I was clapping, smiling, and jumping up and down whenever Ralph came to Meggie at Matlock Island. I was crying for the last portion of the book, starting with Dane's death and continuing through Justine, Meggie, and Ralph's reaction. I was so angry whenever I read of Luke's mistreatment towards Meggie. I was screaming at Justine to marry Rainer. I weeped for the Cleary family whenever This is the first novel that I came to know and love the characters, and I did not want to end the story because I did not want to lose touch with the characters and their lives. McCullough did an excellent job with her descriptions and development of plot. Though many of the other reviews say McCullough is extremely verbose, she writes no unnecessary words. Every word furthers the plot along of gives us a more vivid description of the characters or their feelings. By the end of the novel, I felt as if I had lived on Drogheda. I felt as though I was in love with Ralph de Bricassart.. Spine lines/edge rubs/Tight Clean. Mass Market Paperback. Good. more information

Moving On
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Pocket Books, 1989. Reviewer: Eileen from Massachusetts This big book is replete with McMurtry's usual supporting cast of strong and strange characters (the best is Sonny, the ex-Rodeo Champion of the World and a truly loose man). The main character, Patsy, who is a study in female contradictions and a pleasure to behold on paper, prances fitfully through the '60s and marriage, lust, motherhood, and a Haight-Ashbury family intervention. Joining her are best friend Emma Horton (prequel to "Terms of Endearment")and a comically engaging parade of academics, lovers, rivals, and barrel riders. 19) The Ordeal of Richard Feverel
Meredith, George

The Ordeal of Richard Feverel
Washington Square Press, 1962. Book Description First published in 1859, Meredith's first and most controversial novel concerns Sir Austin Feverel's misconceived attempts to educate his son Richard according to a system of his own devising--a system based on theories of sexual restraint. Exploring generational and gender conflicts, the psychology of sexual jealousy and repression, and myths of Eden and Utopia, The Ordeal of Richard Feverel shocked Victorian readers but gained for itself a cult following. "Now that it has been freed from its reputation," writes Mendelson, "readers can discover again the tragic and ironic force, and the psychological and formal complexity that make The Ordeal of Richard Feverel one of the most profound, subtle, and moving works of English fiction.". Every minute is enjoyable, from the domestic intrigue in the village's fanciest homes to a frenzied love affair in St Petersberg, from idyllic afternoons in Tyler's Meadow to frozen, frightened nights in Quaker camps devoted to the Russian poor, from its splendid beginning to a happy ending you will savor every minute of it, just as I did..
