1) The Man Who Burned the White House: Story of Admiral of the Fleet Sir George Cockburn, 1772-1853
Pack, James

London: Kenneth Mason, 1987 Admiral of the Fleet Sir George Cockburn, 10th Baronet (22 April 1772 - 19 August 1853) was a British naval commander of the late 18th through the mid-19th centuries. He held important commands during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 and eventually rose to become Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord. Cockburn played a major role in the War of 1812 as second in command to Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren to the end of March 1814 and then to Warren's successor, Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane for the rest of the war. He cruised relentlessly up and down the Chesapeake Bay and other parts of the Atlantic coast in 1813 and 1814, seizing American shipping, disrupting commerce, and raiding the ports. In the Chesapeake, Cockburn was responsible for carrying out government instructions to encourage the emigration of the enslaved Black population. In addition he implemented Cochrane's own plan of recruiting a Corps of Colonial Marines from among the Black refugees. The most important of Cockburn's actions was the capture and burning of Washington on 24 August 1814 as an advisor to Major General Robert Ross. Parker, Tony

London: Hutchinson, 1975 The study of a vanished world. British off-shore lighthouses are no longer manned by teams of keepers. Instead, they are electronically controlled from the shore. He tells the stories of te keepers and their families - their hopes and fears, their motives for doing the work they did, their feelings about the lighthouse service and the effect the work had on their relationships. He is especially good on the way separation shaped the lives of maried couples who were often parted for months at a time while husbands tended their lights and wives stayed on shore.. First Edition. 10) A History of Greek Fire and Gunpowder
Partington, J.R

Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons, 1960. For nearly 600 years, firearms derived from gunpowder and other chemicals were the weapons of war. This text provides a world survey of the evolution of incendiary devices using gunpowder, "Greek fire" and saltpetre. "Greek fire", a composition believed to be made from a distilled petroleum fraction and other ingredients (but not saltpetre), was used in the Siege of Constantinople and during the Crusades. The text examines its antecedents - other incendiary devices used in ancient warfare - and looks at European gunpowder recipe books ("The Latin Book of Fire", "Belifortis" and "Feuerwerkbuch"), and at the history of infernal machines, mines, canons, small arms and artillery. The book includes chapters on gunpowder and weapons in Muslim lands, India and China, including fire books, the use of gunpowder as a propellant, the artillery of the Mughal Emperors, and the use of saltpetre in explosives. It traces the development of gunpowder to 11th-century China, and cites the first-known mention and picture of a firearm in 1326. With a foreword by Frederick Morgan.. First Edition. Cloth. Commissioned an ensign in the British Army, Arthur Wellesley rose to prominence in the Napoleonic Wars, eventually reaching the rank of field marshal. The Duke of Wellington has rather a mixed reputation in his home country of Ireland, where he is generally seen as being British instead of being Irish. Phillips, C.E. Lucas, O.B.E., M.C

London: Heinemann, 1957 with the co-operation of Commander J.S. Kerans, D.S.O., R.N. On 20 April 1949, HMS Amethyst was on her way from Shanghai to Nanjing (Nanking) on the Yangtze River to replace HMS Consort, which was standing as guard ship for the British Embassy there due to the Chinese Civil War between the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communists. At around 08:31, after a burst of small arms fire, a People's Liberation Army (PLA) field gun battery on the north bank of the river fired a salvo of ten shells, which fell well short of the ship, and was assumed to be part of a regular bombardment of Nationalist forces on the south bank. Speed was increased, and large Union flags were unfurled on either side of the ship, after which there was no more firing. This book tells the story of the subsequent events. Playne, Caroline E

London: George Allen & Unwin, 1933. The social history of Britain during the last two years of the war. A main theme arises, the drama of the struggle behind the terrible fighting, the struggle waged to arrive at the re-establishment of peace between the perverse will to gain the war at all costs and the growing desire to achieve peace and settlement in a devastated world: this struggle, as here unrolled, is shown to have had an important bearing on the untoward peace finally arrived at, and on the disastrous conditions we still groan under. The month by month records which tell the tale of these momentous years are closely followed. Spine worn and chipped.. First Edition. Cloth. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. RAF Newton

Newton, Nottinghamshire: Prepared and Printed at R.A.F. Newton, 1973 A induction manual for new recruits to RAF Swinderby in Licolnshire with 62 pages of information covering all aspects of service life. Illustrated with humorous cartoons of Air Force life. RAF Swinderby was a Royal Air Force Bomber Command airfield opened in 1940, one of the last of the stations completed under the RAF's expansion plans started in the 1930s. It was built near the village of Swinderby, Lincolnshire just off the south east side of the A46 (the Fosse Way) between Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire and Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. Under the command of Number 1 Group, Swinderby came under the auspices of RAF Bomber Command and housed numbers 300 and 301 squadrons, mainly Polish manned initially flying the Fairey Battle. Later squadrons would use such diverse aircraft as the Handley Page Hampden, the Vickers Wellington, Avro Manchester and finally Avro Lancasters. In 1964, Swinderby changed its role to that of recruit training, responsible for the basic training of all enlisted RAF personnel prior to their trade training. In 1995 the station was put up for sale to commercial development and the airfield plays host to semi-regular events including antique fairs. Many buildings, hangars and the air traffic control tower remain in evidence along with acres of concrete runways and taxiways. Incidently RAF Newton is now a centre for assylum seekers. nd. circa 1973. Front cover loose.. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information
