17) Here Is Your War [SIGNED BOOK PLATE]
Pyle, Ernie

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1943. Publisher's tan cloth, lettered in dark brown on spine panel, slightly flecked at a few spots on front cover, small surface abrasion/soil mark midway along rear joint. [vii],304 pp., illus. w/ drawings. First edition (unstated), undated title page, no additional printings indicated on copyright page. Front flyleaf shows central area of glue residue over which is mounted former owner's small address label. Light toning/ghosting to to verso of front blank and half-title from WW2 news clipping laid in. Contents very slightly toned. Mounted on lower front flyleaf is a book plate of James H. Rhodes & Company stating "This book is especially / Autographed / by the Author," signed by Pyle in ink. First-state dust jacket with burgundy-brown field, $3.00 publisher's price intact, shows mild chipping with slight loss at head of spine, slight rubbing along front joint and at heel of spine, slightly toned on rear panel and along flap folds, overall nicely preserved in new mylar; excerpt from Malcolm Bingay on rear flap (indicating first issue, later replaced by John Steinbeck's tribute to Pyle). For purposes of comparison, we offer free with this purchase another copy of "Here Is Your War," a stated 8th ptg. in publisher's blue cloth with silver foil lettering, printed on wartime paper and thus approx. 1/4" thinner than the signed copy, solid Near Fine. This second copy has a VG+ dust jacket with a brown (rather than burgundy-brown) field, with identical text on front flap and rear panel but with Steinbeck's tribute to Pyle on the rear flap; this latter jacket is clearly sized for the original issue, evidenced by the fact that the spine lettering extends onto the rear panel and the rear panel lettering is almost flush with the flap fold. Among the most monumental publication efforts of the U.S. Government ever accomplished.
