For purposes of comparison, we offer free with this purchase another copy of "Here Is Your War," a stated 8th ptg. in publisher's blue cloth with silver foil lettering, printed on wartime paper and thus approx. 1/4" thinner than the signed copy, solid Near Fine. This second copy has a VG+ dust jacket with a brown (rather than burgundy-brown) field, with identical text on front flap and rear panel but with Steinbeck's tribute to Pyle on the rear flap; this latter jacket is clearly sized for the original issue, evidenced by the fact that the spine lettering extends onto the rear panel and the rear panel lettering is almost flush with the flap fold. This set was evidently used as a classroom text, probably during the former owner's tenure as a student at Brooklyn Polytechnic: tipped on to the front flyleaf of each volume is a typed assignment sheet, and all volumes show a few very scattered underlining or marginal check-marks in pencil. Overall, somewhat compromised cosmetically with blemishes, but still more than acceptable as a reference set, exteriors G to VG-, interiors solid VG or better.. Cloth. Serially numbered 1-130, with Volumes LIV and LV (serial numbers 112 and 113) never published. Originally printed by GPO, 1880-1901. Uniformly bound in original black buckram, spine panels lettered in gold or silver foil, printed on 45-lb. Glatfelter Acid-Free Paper. All volumes have been removed from the publisher's shrinkwrap but appear otherwise unused. Several of the thicker volumes are slightly stressed and/or pulling at heads of spine, a simple result of the quality of paper used in reprinting this set. Each volume shows a neatly inked date of "July 1985" on the front pastedown (presumed date of purchase) and the former owner's embossed name stamp on the title page but is otherwise unmarked. Among the most monumental publication efforts of the U.S. Government ever accomplished.
