HERE IS YOUR WAR. Signed
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1943 The Pyle/Steinbeck Presentation Copy. New York: Henry Holt and Company, [1943]. A likely first edition but a possible candidate for a variant binding with an undated title page & no further printings mentioned on the verso, neither of which are actually called for. 8vo, 304pp., tan cloth, black titles. A wartime production of uncertain bibliography with binding variants frequently encountered; teal boards with silver titling, green cloth with black titling, burgundy cloth with silver titling. Regardless, this is one of Pyle's own copies of this WWII classic, inscribed by one great war correspondent, Pulitzer winner & great friend to another on the front free endpaper: "To Gwyn & John Steinbeck - / Alright goddamit, since you wouldn't ask / for one, here's one anyway - personally, I / think its wonderful! / Ernie Pyle" An extraordinary copy in very good condition with some professional repair to the spine ends, contents clean, dust jacket with original $3.00 price, showing modest use with small loss at the crown & heel. [In later printings, the excerpt by Malcolm Bingay on the rear flap was replaced by a blurb by Steinbeck]. Custom Clamshell Collector's Case with a beautiful wood cut style blind emboss of the famous Pyle dust jacket illustration. Ernie Pyle's moving first-hand reportage as a roving war correspondent for Scripps-Howard, of the plight of WWII American G.I.'s fighting Germans in North Africa. Pyle followed the American troops from England through the campaign in Tunisia, the Allies first great victory. "There are really two wars and they haven't much to do with each other. There is the war of maps and logistics, of campaigns, of ballistics, armies, divisions and regiments--and that is General [George] Marshall's war. - Then there is the war of the homesick, weary, funny, violent, common men who wash their socks in their helmets, complain about the food, whistle at the Arab girls, or any girls for that matter, and bring themselves through as dirty a business as the world has ever seen and do it with humor and dignity and courage--and that is Ernie Pyle's war." - John Steinbeck, TIME . 1st Edition. Illus. by Carol Johnson. more information

ANTHEM
London: Cassell, 1938 The true first edition, first issue of the author's uncommon second book; one of an estimated 3,500 copies only. Bound in the original red & black mottled cloth, top edge stained black, with the original black end-papers in excellent condition. The very rare dustwrapper on this particular example omits British pricing & instead carries the words 'Colonial Edition' at the foot of the front flap. Perinn A2a. references William Dunn regarding 2 states of the dustwrapper; the apparent first, spine priced at 6 shillings net, & the second state omitting the spine price but with "Colonial Edition" printed on the lower front flap. However, Perinn might not have actually ever seen a copy of the Colonial edition & Bill Dunn had seen only the one copy, & deduced that the priced dustwrapper preceded the un-priced, which in fact is probably incorrect. The export market for British publishers like Collins & Cassell [which excluded the US] was sufficiently important that colonial edition dustwrappers often preceded, domestic dustwrapper printing & in this instance this may very well be the case. Either way, both dustwrappers are uncommon to say the least & extremely rare in condition. An excellent bright, fine copy, the rare dustwrapper with one small chip at the top of the front panel. The True First Edition, preceding the American edition by eight years because it was denied US publication. Missing from most Rand collections. . 1st Edition. more information

New York: Random House, 1957 A fabulous collector's grade copy of this Rand High Spot. First Edition, First issue, correctly priced dustwrapper with 10/57 on the lower front flap & the publisher's name in full on the bottom rear flap. Thick octavo, pp. 1171. As near to perfect as one could hope to achieve, the original green cloth binding is very fine, & fresh - something one seldom gets to see. The superb Salter designed dustwrapper is truly wonderful. This is the finest copy we have seen in many a moon with the white of the dustwrapper, recto, verso, pristine and with flawless colour depth in the famous rich purple, green, blue, yellow & red hues. Two tiny surface rubs, 1 very short closed tear otherwise as new and unrestored. This book has been protected from exposure to daylight for over 50 years & looks as fresh as the day it was published. The Classic Rand - amongst all modern firsts, this dustwrapper is probably our favorite for its richness of design. A stunning premium copy - a hundred times more difficult to find than 99.9 percent of the copies offered today. Perhaps one of the best example available anywhere at any price.
