On 27 May, 1940 almost 100 officers and men of the isoloated Norfolk Regiment surrendered to an S.S. regiment at La Paradis in northern France. They were disarmed, marched into a field, and mowed down by machine-gun fire. That two among their number survived forms part of this story; their evidence, to a British military court in Hamburg, Germany, resulted in the execution, in 1949, of the S.S. officer responsible . . .
