The Story of Little David
London: S.W. Partridge. Hardcover, dark blue cloth decorated in black and gold, with a small oval color label depicting a bouquet of flowers affixed to front cover. 64pp. plus a fascinating 15 page illustrated publisher's catalog appended at rear. Illustrated title page and four full page plates. No name, no writing or marking internally, no pages missing, etc. Light wear to outer front joint with several small holes to cloth and some mild damage to top edge of front free endpaper, else a surprisingly well preserved copy of this late Victorian children's book. S.W. Partridge was a publisher active from at least the mid 1860's up through World War I. This book dates from the period 1870 to 1880. Catalog at rear lists doxens more childrens titles and gives a fascinating look into the nature and content of early childrens reading material during the latter half of the nineteenth century. This is the last appearence of the bumbling Oxonians on yet another of their Pickwickenesque adventures.
