Zaandam: Armalite. Very Good. 1961. Softcover. 28 pages followed by 14 plates (1 folding) , blue plastic covers, very good. 4-1/2 by 6 inches. From the Wikipedia website: "The AR-10 is an American 7.62 mm battle rifle developed by Eugene Stoner in the late 1950s at ArmaLite, then a division of the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation. The rifle had some innovative features at the time of its introduction (1956) ; it was over 1 lb (0.45 kg) lighter than most other infantry rifles, it was significantly easier to control in automatic fire, was more accurate in semi-auto mode, and arguably handled better than any other weapon of the period. The unique features of the AR-10 would eventually be developed into the U. S. Army's M16. Over its production life, the original AR-10 was built in relatively small numbers, with fewer than 10,000 rifles assembled. "; 28 pages . more information

Soldier of Fortune Magazine (SOF) August 1979 Volume Vol. 4 Number No. 8
Boulder, CO: Omega Group. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1979. Softcover. Very good. From the Wikipedia website: "Soldier of Fortune magazine, abbreviated SOF, is a periodical published by Colorado-based Omega Group Ltd. And devoted to coverage of military conflicts around the globe, including conventional war, low-intensity warfare, counter insurgency and terrorism. The motto of the magazine is "The Journal of Professional Adventurers." The magazine was founded in 1975 by Lieutenant Colonel, U. S. Army Reserve, (Ret. ) Robert K. Brown, a Green Beret who served in Vietnam. After Brown retired from active duty, he began a circular with information on opportunities for mercenary employment in Oman where the Sultan Qaboos had recently overthrown his father and was battling a communist insurgency. Brown's small circular soon evolved into a large glossy magazine. Significant in the early development of SOF was the magazine's unprecedented recruitment of foreign nationals to serve in the Rhodesian Security Forces during the Rhodesian Bush War. ~ The magazine is staunchly anti-communist. Some see SOF as a continuation of the men's adventure pulp magazines that gradually fell out of favor in the late 1960s." . more information

21 Days to Baghdad: the Inside Story of How America Won the War Against Iraq
New York: Time Inc.. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. 1932273123 . 176 pages, well illustrated in color, cloth, DJ, very good. From the dust jacket: "In 21 Days To Baghdad, Time's photographers and correspondents provide exclusive, eyewitness accounts of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was a history-making campaign. In just three weeks, U. S. And British forces sprinted 350 miles from the Kuwait-Iraq border to downtown Baghdad. Time's journalists were there - reporting the action as the 3rd Infantry Division fought off suicidal attackers in Najaf, riding in the lead humvee when the Marines took Kut, traversing mountains with special forces as they hunted down terrorists. 21 Days to Baghdad gives an insider look at the people of Iraq as well, taking you to the urban battlefields of Baghdad, Basra and Kirkuk to see the impact of war on ordinary citizens. All told, 21 Days to Baghdad is a griping perspective on a new kind of war from some of the world's best photojournalists and reporters. " ; 176 pages . more information

Cleveland,: World Publishing Company. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1950. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 61 pages, 6 color plates, illustrated, pictorial boards, tape repairs to backstrip otherwise very good. "The story of American firearms and their role in our country's history is of great interest to students and collectors alike. Our native inventors' ingenuity has not been matched for design and originality by even the best of European gunmakers. Not only were many different types of weapons originated here, but, whether it was a rifle designed for accuracy or a pistol intended for military or defensive use, the American arm answered the needs for which it was designed." Lawrence of Arabia. a Biographical Enquiry
London: Collins. Good in Good dust jacket. 1955. Hardcover. 448 pages, 10 plates, 3 maps, cloth, DJ, ex-library with usual library markings otherwise very good. From the introductory letter to Alister Kershaw: "In Part III of this book you will find in more detail the account of my investigations into Lawrence's assertions that in 1922 and again in 1925 (when he was a private in the Tanks) he had been offered the post of High Commissioner for Egypt. On investigation I came to the conclusion that this claim was unfounded. . . Gradually as I went more closely into the material available I came to the conclusion that the Egypt affair is not a regrettable exception. On the contrary it is but one more example of a systematic falsification and over-valuing of himself and his achievements which Lawrence practiced from a very early date. In other words the national hero turned out at least half a fraud. The scope of my projected book was insensibly changed and from a biography it became a biographical enquiry, the facts for which had to be tracked down with the minute care of a literary detective. |
New York: Random House. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0375502319 . Xiv, 319, [3] pages, 4 plates, map, cloth, DJ, very good. From the Publisher: "Anthrax. Smallpox. Incurable and horrifying Ebola-related fevers. For two decades, while a fearful world prepared for nuclear winter, an elite team of Russian bioweaponeers began to till a new killing field: a bleak tract sown with powerful seeds of mass destruction--by doctors who had committed themselves to creating a biological Armageddon. Biohazard is the never-before-told story of Russia's darkest, deadliest, and most closely guarded Cold War secret. No one knows more about Russia's astounding experiments with biowarfare than Ken Alibek. Now the mastermind behind Russia's germ warfare effort reveals two decades of shocking breakthroughs...how Moscow's leading scientists actually reengineered hazardous microbes to make them even more virulent...the secrets behind the discovery of an invisible, untraceable new class of biological agents just right for use in political assassinations...the startling story behind Russia's attempt to turn a sample of the AIDS virus into the ultimate bioweapon. And in a chilling work of real-world intrigue, Biohazard offers us all a rare glimpse into a shadowy scientific underworld where doctors manufacture mass destruction, where witnesses to errors are silenced forever, and where ground zero is closer than we ever dared believe. The Dominion of War: Empire and Liberty in North America, 1500-2000
Viking. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2005. Hardcover. 0670033707 . Xxiv, 520 pages, illustrations, cloth, DJ, very good. From Booklist: "Two historians present an incisive, provocative account of the U. S. Rise to global preeminence over five centuries. Central to their thesis is the assertion that military conflict has been essential in determining the cultural and political evolution of North America. It was imperial ambition rather than a love of liberty that led to British victory in the French and Indian War, ensuring Anglo-American supremacy in the eastern half of North America; paradoxically, that British victory led directly to the American Revolution. Similarly, our imperial ambition, which provoked the Mexican-American War, intensified our sectional rivalries, and the Civil War followed. Although the authors' views deserve to be challenged by those holding alternative visions, Anderson and Cayton have provided a well-written and important reinterpretation of our past.
