The Atherton Dames Cookbook
Atherton, CA: (n.p., circa 1970s). Soft Cover. 303 pages, pictorial wraps, spiral bound, very good. Excerpt from text: 'Holbrook-Palmer Recreation Park was known as 'Elmwood' for nearly 80 years. The property was developed originally in 1875 with a 15-room home, barn, and water tower plus a gatekeeper's home. In 1881, Charles Holbrook purchased the property as a summer home for his family, and the property was willed to the Town of Atherton by his daughter, Olive Holbrook Palmer in 1958. Her husband, Silas Palmer, rebuilt the house in 1958 after a fire had destroyed it, but the water tower dating from 1875 and the barn, circa 1890, remain on the property. The remodeled home is presently serving as a recreation center for the residents of Atherton with facilities for meetings, classes, teen activities, and offices of the Holbrook-Palmer Park Foundation and the Atherton Dames, an auxiliary of the Foundation. Elmwood was a working farm as well as a summer residence for the Holbrook and Palmer families. From these magnificent acres, all fruits and vegetables used on the tables of these families were produced. The seventeen undeveloped acres consisted of fruit orchards, wheat fields, grazing lands for their cows and vegetable gardens. It is fitting that this cookbook be dedicated to 'Elmwood', for from its fertile acreage many delicious and unusual foods were produced. . (more information)
