From the spring of 1943, the G-series saw the appearance of bulges in the cowling when the 7.92 mm MG 17 was replaced with the 13 mm MG 131 heavy machine guns (G-5 onwards) due to the latter's much larger Breechblock, and on the wings (due to larger tyres) , leading to the Bf 109G-6s nickname "The Bulge" (German: "Die Beule"). 37) Waffen-SS: Hitler's Black Guard At War
AILSBY, CHRISTOPHER

Bristol: Parragon. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1997. Hard Cover. 0752528335 . 176 pages, very well illustrated (some in color), cloth, dj, fine. 9-1/2 by 12 inches. From the dj: Nazi Germany's Waffen-SS was one of the most brutal, fanatical and feared military organizations in history. From its humble beginnings as a small, select band whose duty was to protect the leader of the Nazi Party, Adolf Hitler, from both internal and external enemies, by the end of World War II it numbered nearly one million men, and included dozens of nationalities. During its existence it achieved some of the most stunning victories ever seen in the annals of warfare, but it also committed a catalogue of heinous crimes. Waffen-SS: Hitler's Black Guard at War is a fully illustrated volume on the battles, campaigns and war crimes of Hitler's Praetorian Guard. Well equipped and highly motivated, the men who wore the death's head badge swept aside all opposition in the Blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland, the West and the Balkans in 1939-41. But it was in Russia that the Waffen-SS found its real testing ground. The divisions of the Waffen-SS were to prove themselves on the most complex and demanding of battlefields, and the elite units, such as the Leibstandarte, Das Reich and Wiking Divisions, showed themselves to be masters of mechanized warfare and the all-arms battle. With the aid of full-colour maps and colour and black and white photographs, Waffen-SS: Hitler's Black Guard at War recreates all the aspects of the Waffen-SS's war on the Eastern Front, such as the Demyansk Pocket, the retaking of Kharkov and the Battle of Kursk. It also traces the growth of the SS panzer divisions and the recruitment and organization of Waffen-SS units, and includes details of all the great Waffen-SS commanders, such as Sepp Dietrich and Papa Hausser. But the soldiers of the Waffen-SS were not just highly trained troops. The black-uniformed men of the armed Schutz Staffel (Protection Squad) were ideological warriors, an elite selected on the basis of rigid racial and physical standards, who viewed with contempt the members of those races classed by National Socialist ideology as being subhuman. Trained to be highly aggressive on the battlefield and contemptuous of death, they showed no pity toward Germany's enemies. As a result they would commit atrocities against civilians and prisoners with ease. Waffen-SS: Hitler's Black Guard at War examines the war crimes and atrocities of Waffen-SS formations throughout the war. . more information

Joseph Alexander reflects years of research into primary sources, new translations of Japanese documents, and interviews with survivors. " From Publishers Weekly: "Alexander, a retired Marine officer and established scholar, uses a broad spectrum of fresh Japanese and American sources to present a gripping narrative of one of the bloodiest battles of WWII in the Pacific theater. At Tarawa in the Kiribati (formerly Gilbert) islands, "uncommon valor was a common virtue" on both sides. But this account is more than battle history. Alexander interprets Tarawa as a military test bed, a validation of the concept of amphibious assault against defended positions. The Marines and the Navy made mistakes but learned from them. Without the experience gained at Tarawa, America's path across the central Pacific would have been longer and bloodier, according to the author. Tarawa was a psychological landmark as well. The savage, close-quarters fighting and high casualties helped solidify the grim determination in the U. S. To prevail over the Japanese. " ; 304 pages . more information

39) Edson's Raiders. the 1st Marine Raider Battalion in World War II
Alexander, Joseph H

Annapolis: Naval Institute Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. 1557500207 . Xiv, [2], 345, [4] pages, illustrations, maps, cloth, DJ, very good. Stated first printing. From the dust jacket: "This is the story of the remarkable men of 1st Marine Raider Battalion, known by the name of its founding commander, the legendary jungle fighter Merritt A. "Red Mike" Edson. Edson's Raiders provided the vanguard of a U. S. Marine Corps experiment with special lightly-armed, mobile "commando" units in the Pacific. From 1942 to 1943, these highly trained volunteers fought seven critical battles in the Solomon Islands--with names like Tulagi, Tasimboko, the Matanikau River and the Dragon's Peninsula. They were desperate, bloody affairs fought against some of the most experienced jungle fighters in the Japanese empire. Twenty-four Raiders fought with such valor that they had ships named in their honor, all but one posthumously. ~ Alexander's portrayal of the Raiders' most notable battle, the defense of Guadalcanal's Henderson Field along an elevation known ever since as Edson's Ridge, shows why that three-day conflict became an indisputable touchstone of Marine Corps history. Allen, Peter

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1980. Hardcover. 0684167468 . Xiv, 320 pages, 8 plates, maps, cloth, DJ, very good. From the dust jacket: " Most accounts of the action in the northwest European theater of World War 2 focus on the battle of the Ardennes-Germany's final offensive. But the Battle for the Rhineland and the crossing of the Rhine in March 1945 by American, British, and Canadian troops, accounted for some of the most bitterly fought campaigns of all. One More River reappraises the closing months of the war in Europe. Emphasizing the action in the Rhineland: the U. S. Army's assault on the Roer dams: the British push through the Reichswald: the magnificent contribution of the Canadian army: the capture of the bridge at Remagen; Patton's spectacular drive to the Rhine and his famous nighttime crossing: and the linkup of the Airborne Divisions with the Allied ground forces across the Rhine. Always looming in the background is the tension among the senior allied commanders- Montgomery, Bradley. Patton, and Eisenhower; their frequent clashes of personality could have threatened the entire campaign. Peter Allen pieces together numerous firsthand accounts and archival material in the most in-depth and important study ever published of the closing stages of the war in Europe. 41) Code-Name Downfall: the Secret Plan to Invade Japan - and Why Truman Dropped the Bomb
ALLEN, THOMAS B. and, POLMAR, NORMAN

New York: Simon & Schuster. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1995. Hard Cover. 0684804069 . 351 pages, illustrations, cloth, dj, very good. 1st edition. From Publishers Weekly: Historians have challenged President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, claiming that the war with Japan could have been ended by negotiations. Allen and Polmar (Rickover: Controversy and Genius) counter that the Japanese were not ready to surrender until after the second bomb was dropped. Accordingly, massive Allied landings on Japan's home islands thus remained a probability until very late in the war. The secret plan for this invasion, along with the Japanese plan for opposing it, are presented here for the first time. Experts predicted that the Americans would suffer at least half a million casualties, while critics have suggested that this figure was inflated to justify dropping the bomb. The authors have uncovered evidence to support the prediction: for example, the requisition of 370,000 Purple Heart medals by the Quartermaster Corps, indicating the number of wounded expected; 130,000 killed in action would fit the average war dead/wounded ratio, for a total of about 500,000 casualties. Finally, Allen and Polmar convincingly argue that Truman actively sought ways to end the conflict at the lowest cost of American and Japanese lives. This is a convincing case to settle a long-running controversy. . more information

45) Citizen soldiers : the U.S. Army from the Normandy beaches to the Bulge to the surrender of Germany, June 7, 1944-May 7, 1945
AMBROSE, STEPHEN E

New York: Simon & Schuster. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1997. Hard Cover. 0684815257 . 512 pages, illustrations, 9 maps, cloth, dj, very good. From the publisher: From the bestselling author of Undaunted Courage and D-Day, the definitive book on the most important day of World War II, comes the inspiring story of the ordinary men of the U.S. Army in northwest Europe from the day after D-Day until the end of the bitterest days of the war. Citizen Soldiers opens at 0001 hours, June 7, 1944, on the Normandy beaches, and ends at 0245 hours, May 7, 1945. In between come the battles in the hedgerows of Normandy, the breakout at St.-Lô, the Falaise Gap, Patton tearing through France, the liberation of Paris, the attempt to leap the Rhine in Operation Market-Garden, the near-miraculous German recovery, the battles around Metz and in the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge -- the biggest battle in the history of the U.S. Army -- the capture of the bridge at Remagen, and finally the overrunning of Germany. From the high command (including Eisenhower, Bradley. and Patton) on down to the enlisted men, Stephen E. Ambrose draws on hundreds of interviews and oral histories from men on both sides who were there. Ambrose once again recreates the experiences of the individuals who fought the battles. The women who served as nurses, secretaries, clerks, code-breakers, and flyers are part of the narrative, as are the Germans who fought against us. Within the chronological story, there are chapters on medics, nurses, and doctors; on the quartermasters; on replacements; on what it was like to spend a night on the front lines; on sad sacks, cowards, and criminals; on Christmas 1944; on weapons of all kinds. Ambrose reveals the learning process of a great army -- how to cross rivers, how to fight in snow or hedgerows, how to fight in cities, how to coordinate air and ground campaigns, how to fight in winter and on the defensive, how citizens become soldiers in the best army in the world. Ambrose evokes the suffering of warfare, fighting in the cold and wet, gruesome wounds, combat exhaustion, looting, shooting prisoners, random destruction and more. Throughout, the perspective is that of the enlisted men and junior officers. Even when writing about Ike, Monty, Patton, and Bradley, Ambrose does so from the point of view of the men in the front lines and focuses on how the decisions of the brass affected them. Citizen Soldiers is a biography of the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations, June 7, 1944, to May 7, 1945. Allied citizen soldiers overcame their fear and inexperience, the mistakes of the high command, and the enemy to win the war. Once again, Stephen E. Ambrose shows that free men fight better than slaves, that the sons of democracy proved to be better soldiers than the sons of Nazi Germany. . more information

AMBROSE, STEPHEN E

New York: Simon & Schuster. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1995. 0671673343 . 655 pages, 16 plates, 8 maps, cloth, dust jacket, very good. From Library Journal: "World War II buffs have always liked books about the Normandy invasions, but most popular accounts are now several years old. Ambrose has updated the familiar story of the massive amphibious landings with new information, deft historical perspective, and a gripping narrative. Several opening chapters about the strategic situation and the laborious preparations for the invasion keep this book from becoming just another battlefield drama. His portraits of the various military commanders are superb. Numerous interviews with Allied veterans provide fresh material for the vital human element of the story, and accounts from German survivors show the enemy's viewpoint. The result is the best popular history since Max Hastings's vigorous "Overload: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy" (LJ 6/1/84) , detailed enough for the historian yet with plenty of action for the lay reader.
