From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Edward Kamau Brathwaite (born 1930) is a Barbadian writer, poet and dramatist; his poetry explores the African and Caribbean roots of his country and his people. The "national language" that he proposes is a new type of poetry linked with those themes. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, he was born to humble parents, and he attended many schools, including Harrison College, Pembroke College, Cambridge, and Sussex University. In 1955, he travelled to Ghana, shortly after independence, where he worked for the Ministry of Education until 1962. Then he moved to Kingston where he taught history at the University of the West Indies and established Savacou the journal of the Caribbean Artists Movement (1966-1970): he was its secretary-general. Since the 1970s he has taught at many United States schools and published many scholarly works. Presently, he teaches comparative literature at New York University. In 1968, he received a Ph.D. from the University of Sussex, and in 1994, the International Neustadt Prize for Literature. His travels gave him knowledge about African culture and traditions and its pre-colonial identity, which then he decided to use in his poetry." . more information

SLATER, MARY

New York: Viking Press,. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1968. Hard Cover. 244 pages, 16 plates, map endpapers, 7 text maps, cloth, dj, gift inscription to former owner otherwise very good. From the dj: Mary Slater is virtually all the Caribbean Islands, and has lived for extended periods on many of them. Jamaica and the Bahamas, Trinidad and Barbados, Pureto Rico and the Virgin Islands may now be relatively well known (even if some of the individual Bahaman islands certainly are not: Eleuthera, Andros, Cat Island, Long Cay, Mayaguana and Inaguana, for instance). The Netherlands Antilles are, however, little visited, yet Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba have an altogether individual flavour. And, for all their intrinsic and varying attractions, Grenada, the Turks, Caicos and Cayman Islands - al tense are at present virtually unvisited by the tourist. So that Mary Slater's book deals with many places which, from this point of view, have never been described before. . more information

SMITH, BRADLEY

New York: Alfred A. Knopf,. Very Good. 1957. Hard Cover. [20],400 pages, well illustrated, maps, cloth, very good. From An Interview with Bradley Smith in 1992: "Escape to the West Indies was a great shock to me. Alfred Knopf called and he said, "Bradley, Blanche and I have been up tonight and we think that we should do a book on the Caribbean, there isn't any. And we'd like you to do it. We saw a story of yours in Life called 'West Indies Escape.' " I said, "This will be easy. I can use a lot of my Life pictures, and I'll do some more pictures and that will be the West Indies." And he said, "I don't want any pictures in the book. I want about 80,000 words, 70,000 at the least, and I want you to do all 31 islands of the Caribbean. I want you to do the history and any anecdotal material; their poetry and music." I said, "That's going to cost quite a bit to go back and do that." He said, "We'll raise the advance a bit" - it wasn't much anyway - "that's what we want." I said, "Could we have one black-and-white picture to introduce each chapter?" He said that would be okay. "This is a book that will be beautifully printed, we'll use great paper, the best designer we've got in the house, and that's what we'd like you to do." So here I was, a photographer being hired as a writer to do a book for a very prestigious firm. It never happened again, I don't think." . more information

Washington: Government Printing Office,. Very Good. 1904. Hard Cover. Compiled under the direction of Worthington Chauncey Ford, chief, Division of Manuscripts. 148 pages, 4 plates, cloth, ex-library with usual library markings otherwise very good. From the preface by Worthington Chauncey Ford, Chief, Division of Manuscripts: "This list is based upon a collection of manuscripts which once belonged to George Chalmers, of England. The volumes were purchased by Peter Force, and with his collection came into the possession of the Library of Congress in 1867. Known as the Vernon-Wager papers, they comprise the correspondences of two men, Sir Charles Wager and Edward Vernon. They cover a very interesting period in the history of the English operations in the West Indies. The expedition against Cartagena and Cuba, a proposed expedition against Georgia and Florida, and the attempts to suppress piracy on the Spanish main, constitute the naval features. The slave trade, the commercial operations of the South Sea Company, and much relating to Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Nova Scotia, are matters of civil concern. The light thrown upon the history of North American and upon British colonial policy is important; as is also the development of naval regulation and policy when Great Britain was contesting with Spain the supremacy of the West Indies." . more information
