LINNER, EDWARD R

Poughkeepsie, NY: Vassar College. 1984. Hard Cover. 0916663000 . 210 pages, well illustrated, cloth, dj, very good. Edited by Elizabeth A. Daniels. From the dj, 'Several years before he retired from the faculty of Vassar College on which he had served rom 1834 to 1965, Edward Linner was appointed to the Matthew Vassar Jr. Chair of Chemistry. Perhaps that was what planted the seed of this book. After he retired from the Vassar chemistry department, Linner worked a history of chemistry and became curious about what books Vassar College had had in the nineteenth century that related to developments in chemistry. He began browsing in the Vassariana collection, which included books that Matthew Vassar, the founder of Vassar College, had given to the college from his own library. From working on a history of chemistry, Linner moved to investigate the origins of Vassar College and Matthew Vassar's role in starting it. Linner died in February 1983 before he was able to arrange for the publication of this book. The publication of this book comes at a time when Vassar College is approaching its one hundred and twenty-fifth year as an educational institution.' . more information

45) Respect for life report of a conference at Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia on the traditional upbringing of American Indian children
MOREY, SYLVESTER M. and, GILLIAM, OLIVIA L

New York: Myrin Institute Books. Very Good. 1974. Soft Cover. 0913098345 . Illustrations by Warren P. Jennerjahn. 202 pages, illustrations, diagrams, wrappers, very good. From the publisher: Native American culture is not something for Indians alone. It has much to offer modern parents and educators, especially about how to establish warm-hearted, inspiring, yet firm relationships between adult and youth. It also has much to tell young people about how to find joy and satisfaction in life. The American Indian traditions of bringing up children are surprisingly practical, effective, and at the same time devotional, or as the Indians themselves expressed it, full of 'respect for life.' This book reports the discussions that took place at a week's conference at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Present were Indians from the Navajo, Mohawk, Crow, Kiowa, Pueblo, Arapaho tribes and officials of the Myrin Institute for Adult Education, New York. The Honorable Louis R. Bruce, Mohawk-Sioux, then Commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, opened the conference. Though these discussions focus on the rearing of children from birth to adolescence, they include crucial observations on the Indian's dilemma in today's society. . more information

46) Neill! Neill! Orange peel! An autobiography
NEILL, A.S. (ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND)

New York: Hart Publishing Company. 1972. Hard Cover. 0805510427 . 538 pages, illustrations, cloth, dj, ex-library with usual library markings otherwise very good. From the dj: From the dj: 'Alexander Sutherland Neill - genius or crackpot? Monumental figure in man's progress toward better modes of education? Or a disturbing gadfly whose combustible theories have been too much for the Establishment? Whatever history's final assessment of this man, Neill's controversial school in Suffolk has in fifty years wielded an enormous influence on child training throughout the world. His seminal book, Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Child Rearing, has sold more than a million copies in English, has been translated into fifteen languages, and is required reading in very many university courses. With sardonic wit, affection and rueful memory, Neill traces his precarious life, which began just about ninety years ago in a small Scottish village, within the confines of an impoverished Calvinistic home. . . . Neill's autobiography tells of those who helped and influenced him - Lane, Wilhelm Reich, his second wife Ena, and daughter Zoe - and his experiences in keeping his unorthodox school afloat. It also expounds his radical ideas about education, sex, politics, psychology. Neill also discusses the future of Summerhill. The volume also contains an interesting album of photographs, an appendix of Neill's letters to newspapers, and passages from A Dominie's Log, which reveal his educational concepts as early as 1915. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 'Alexander Sutherland Neill, 1883-1973, English educator. After teaching at state schools in Scotland, Neill became dissatisfied with traditional education. In 1924, he set up the progressive coeducational Summerhill School at Leiston, England. Among the school’s experiments were optional attendance, a school parliament, and no religious instruction. Neill’s works include The Problem Child (1927), The Problem Family (1949), and Summerhill (1960). He ideas, although controversial, continue to be debated.' . more information
