27) Hornchurch Scramble: The Definitive Account of the RAF Fighter Airfield, Its Pilots, Groundcrew and Staff: 1915 to the End of the Battle of Britain
Smith, Richard C

London, UK: Grub Street, 2000 FINE/FINE First Edition, 1st UK Printing. Short gift inscription on front endpaper, otherwise unmarked. Nearly perfect black and gold boards, pristine text and dozens of glossy photos. Crisp, clean, solid. 6.5" x 9.5", 210 pages, appendices, index includes WWI personnel, 1928-1940 personnel, 1928-1940 general index. From the superb DJ: "When the German Airship raids on London and the South-East arrived from across the Channel in 1915, bringing terror for the first time to a civilian population, Sutton's Farm was established as one of the first Home Defence airfields to counter this threat. Its early RFC pilots achieved notable successes, to be hailed as heroes, the knights of the air. In the 1930s, now known as RAF Hornchurch, the airfield and personnel were in the forefront of many new aviation technology firsts, including ground-to-air wireless communications. And as the RAF expanded, many of the new pilots who would later become aces and household names in the War, began their careers here, the likes of `Sailor' Malan, Bob Stanford Tuck, Brian Kingcome, Alan Deere, Paddy Finucane, Eric Lock. But it was to be as a main Sector Station of No.11 Group in both the Dunkirk evacuation, and the Battle of Britain, that Hornchurch achieved its most lasting fame, with its squadrons initially taking on, and finally besting, the German fighter escorts to her lethal bombers. So, Hornchurch's distinguished record stands second to none and after seven years of exhaustive research, interviewing commanders, pilots, groundcrews, and WAAFs, Richard Smith has produced the definitive history. They all tell their unique story. The triumphs, the tragedies, the laughter, the sadness and the all-important spirit of comradeship. The photographs used in this first volume are from private collections and many have never been published before." . Hard Cover. more information

47) Unauthorized Action : Mountbatten and the Dieppe Raid
Villa, Brian

Toronto: Oxford University Press, 1989 FINE/FINE First Edition. An exceptional copy, with previous owner's name and date on front endpaper only. No other markings, no wear to boards, binding or pages. As-new interiors. 6.25" x 9.25", 314 pages, illustrated, index. On August 19, 1942, a mainly Canadian force left England in an attempt to seize the German-occupied French port of Dieppe - a mission that has been described as the largest raid in history. The result was a complete disaster. About 3300 Canadian soldiers and officers who waited more than 2 and a half years for combat, were killed, wounded or captured in a single morning. Here the author unravels all the complexities that led to it: the political interests in both Britain and Canada; the pressures placed on Churchill and the British Chiefs of Staff; and especially the vagaries of Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was ultimately responsible as Chief of Combined Operations. As the first thorough examination of the disaster, the book is an important contribution to the literature on World War II. The author is Associate Professor of History at the University of Ottawa..
