Wines and Vineyards of New Zealand
London, United Kingdom: Hodder & Stoughton, Limited, 1988. THIS IS A HEAVY BOOK SO THERE WILL BE AN EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGE - INQUIRE FOR DETAILS. Stated 3rd edition (revised). Minimal edgewear; otherwise brand new unread condition. "Who would have thought, in the early 1970's, that the young lad tearing out to Henderson on a motorbike most Saturdays to buy Fino Vineyards medium red wine would have ended up as New Zealand's top wine writer? Those years, while studying first for a BA in Political Science, then for an MA, the longhaired Mike Cooper was like any other young student, partying up large on a Saturday night. It wasn't until 1973, when someone gave Mike a bottle of McWilliams Cabernet Sauvignon, that he realised there was more to wine than his favourite Henderson tipple. Needing to know more, Mike devoured every written word on wine that he could find. There was not much available. Frank Thorpy's "Wine in New Zealand", Hugh Johnson's "Wine" and Alexis Lichine's "Encyclopaedia of Wine and Spirits", plus Jock Graham's and Michael Brett's newspapers columns were the pillars of information. In 1974, having finished his MA Political Science paper requirements, Mike needed money. Driven by his love of wine he found work at Waipuna Lodge as a wine waiter until an opportunity arose at Babich in Henderson as a vineyard labourer. On his first day there, after a misunderstanding with the tractor's brakes led to a roll in a ditch, he was hastily redeployed to basic tasks within the winery. The year away from University gave him time to think about the direction he would follow for his thesis. Many changes in the wine industry were afoot and under the supervision of Professor Bob Chapman, he completed his thesis "The Wine Lobby - Pressure Group Politics and The Wine Industry" and graduated in 1977. The thesis became the foundation for his award-winning book "Wines and Vineyards of New Zealand" first published in 1984. Mike has always loved books and was aware there was no other book on New Zealand wine that gave justice to New Zealand the way overseas wine books did to other countries. Thorpy's book was good but not attractively presented. Cooper's book had strong text and visual content and luckily hit the market at the right time. Coopers says "while most wine writers cut their teeth on newspapers and magazines before writing a book, he did it the other way around - first the books, then the magazines and then the newspaper columns" "Wines and Vineyards of New Zealand" was revised in 1986, with extra pages added to update the status of the industry at that time. In 1988, the book was substantially rewritten "to make the book more readable from a non-academic perspective". Included was an appendix of recent wine releases with tasting notes and Cooper's ratings. These ratings attracted many positive comments and in1990 a distillation of the big book was released. Titled "A Pocket Guide to NZ Wines", it was another success." . Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. (more information)

Minimal edgewear and corner bumping; superficial scratches on front and back cover; otherwise excellent unread condition. "A wine consumer's advocate, I speak from a position of absolute independence from any connection - past or present - to the commercial side of wines. There is a difference between those who, very naturally, enjoy a glass of wine as something pleasant to drink, and those for whom wine is a passion, not only for its obvious charms, but also for its merits as an art form - a treasure worthy of more serious study. The latter love to probe the depths of a wine to discover all its virtues and failings - and to praise or condemn it, with the zeal of conviction. So it is with me." . Hard Cover.
