Little Immigrants: The Orphans Who Came to Canada
Bagnell, Kenneth
Ontario, : Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1980. ....Brown boards with gilt on spine, 271 pages, illustrated with b & w photos, tight clean and square, no names, some sunning to pages, dust jacket is in NF condition. "Between 1870 and the depression of the 1930's more than 80,000 children from the British Isles journeyed to Canada in an extraordinary but almost forgotten odyssey. Some came from the streets of London and Liverpool where they lived by their wits; others were taken from loving families who could no longer provide for them. Often with no choice in the decision, they were sent to Canada by will-meaning philanthropists in what seemed the perfect solution to a dual problem: what to do with tens of thousands of children from the slums of Britain who had no future there, and how to meet the need for cheap labour on Canadian farms. Above all., this is the story of the children themselves, many of them still alive and able to recall, in vivid and poignant detail, what it was like to be uprooted from familiar surroundings and sent to live amidst a nation of strangers." Behind the Glory: The Plan That Won the Allied Air War
Barris, Ted
Toronto: Macmillan of Canada, 1992. ....Orange boards with black lettering, tight square and clean, headband, no names, viii + 358 pages, + 16 pages of b & w plates, end papers are maps, dust jacket is in NF condition. "When war broke out in Sept. 1939, the Allied ari forces had few combat aircraft and even fewer military pilots ready to fight. So in Dec. 1939, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada created the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Most of the air crew training took place in Canada. The instructors moulded thousands of teenaged recruits into fighter and bomber pilots, navigators, air-gunners, bomb-aimers, wireless operators, and ground crew. They took pilots from elementary "circuits and bumps" on Fleet Finches to the rigours of aerobatics in Harvards, navigational practice in Ansons, or gunnery exercises in Fairey Battles. At its peak, the plan adminstered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. The BCATP trained 200,000 air crew in less than five years." Any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a stock photo!. First Edition First Printing. Hard Cover. Near Fine/NF.
