2) Southern Spain
Calvert, A.F

London: A & C Black, 1908. This is the fourth most rare volume in the A & C Black color plate books, 20 shilling series. This series is most collectible, as Black was the first publisher to find an inexpensive way to produce 4 color plates. Souther Spain is a beautiful book in dark red cloth, with yellow and orange design ("particularly nice by Turbayne" according to Inman) on the front and spine. The spine on this copy is some faded. There is some browning to the endpapers, but otherwise the inside is clean and tight. Top edge gilt. Copies on the internet run about $250. to $500. as of this writing (June 2005). All the lovely 75 watercolors, and their captioned tissue guards, are present. . First Edition. Illus. by 75 Trevor Haddon Watercolors with Titled Tissue Guards. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. NY Harper & Bros 1896.. Some general soiling to the binding, and the spine more dull than the ornate, gilt decorated front cover. Overall near very good decorated cloth, teg. Inside this copy is clean and tight, with no foxing or stains or prior owner marks. Weeks was a distinguished landscape painter, noted for pictures of Eastern life. He travelled by caravan. The spine has been rebacked, but the repairs are professional and invisible. Pages xvi, 311 with index, plus 4 pages of publisher ads.
