The "Syria" referred to is a broad term for the Levant. The book starts in Cairo, crosses the Sinai to Jerusalem, and makes its way to Damascus by page 291. Writing a bit stiff and romantic by our standards, but still a travel journal of the mid-19th Century by an American well known literary figure. Smith, American Travellers Abroad C 143.
