Corrigan, Robert W

Euripides
Dell Laurel Edition, 1967. 4 plays...MEDEA is justly famous for its portrayal fo a woman driven by jealously and vengeance. HIPPOLYTUS is recognized as one of the most provocative of the Greek tragedies, a dramatic treatment of conflict between physical and spiritual love. ALCESTIS has the characteristics of both the tragedy and the satyr play, the only surviving example of its kind. THE BACCHAE is perhaps the most sinister of Euripides' plays, a masterful study of religious intoxication and excess.. Appears Unread But w/ Light Wear. Mass Market Paperback. 9) Books That Changed the World
Downs, Robert Bingham

Books That Changed the World
Mentor, 1963. Reviewer a reader: This book summarizes the works for you. With just a little reading you can say something like, "What Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity did was radically change our perspective of time and space, and matter and energy. He showed that all motion is relative, and that the velocity of light is independent of the motion of its source. The implications are profound. To illustrate..." Or, "What Socrates means by his definition of love, as written in Plato's Symposium, is that love is the pursuit of the beautiful; a desire for the immortal though reproduction. This, at its highest state, is manifested in a generalized love of universal beauty - beautiful souls, thoughts, laws, institutions and the immortal afterlife." Everyone needs to read these works, and here is a condensed way to do it. It's a small investment in your education.. Hinge break/cvr aged/underlines/clean Pg. Mass Market Paperback. 15) Ghosts and Other Plays
Ibsen, Henrik

Ghosts and Other Plays
Penguin Classics, 1985. Reviewer: A reader from Bicton, WA Ghosts and Other Plays is a seminal series of plays that combine humor with scathing social critique. Ibsen was not afraid to tackle weightier themes and taboos, in order to shock his audience out of their complacency. These plays demonstrate Ibsen's loathing of hyprocrisy, soulless institutions, the mandates of society which cause suffering (ie. Christianity). He has also been perceived as the figurehead for the emancipation of women from their traditional "place." That is not to say Ibsen is of dire seriousness or dry. His plays move quickly, the events in "Ghosts" for ex. occurring in less than a day. Ibsen is a great playwright whose works remain relevant and vital, in a consumerist society where people still remain afraid to defy cultural norms.. ISBN: 0140441352. 25) King Lear
Shakespeare, William

King Lear
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Signet Classic, 1987. The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature Tragedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, performed in 1605-06 and published in a quarto edition in 1608. One of Shakespeare's finest tragedies, the work displays a pessimism and nihilism that make it a 20th-century favorite. The aging King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, allotting each a portion in proportion to the eloquence of her declaration of love. The hypocritical Goneril and Regan make grand pronouncements and are rewarded; Cordelia, the youngest daughter, who truly loves Lear, refuses to make an insincere speech to prove her love and is disinherited. The two older sisters mock Lear and renege on their promise to support him. Cast out, the king slips into madness and wanders about accompanied by his faithful Fool. He is aided by the Earl of Kent, who, though banished from the kingdom for having supported Cordelia, has remained in Britain disguised as a peasant. Kent brings Lear to Cordelia, who cares for him and helps him regain his reason. The Earl of Gloucester likewise spurns his honest son, Edgar, and believes his conniving illegitimate son, Edmund. Edmund allies himself with Regan and Goneril to defend Britain against the French army mobilized by Cordelia. He turns his father over to Cornwall--who gouges out Gloucester's eyes--then imprisons Cordelia and Lear, but he is defeated in battle by Edgar. Jealous of Edmund's romantic attentions to Regan, Goneril poisons her and commits suicide. Cordelia is hanged. Lear, broken, dies with her body in his arms.. ISBN: 0451517687. 34) Hamlet
Wright, Louis B (Editor)

Hamlet
Folger Library, 1970. Reviewer: drew from Michigan Hamlet has always been thought of as one of the classics of literature. I could not think of another book which deserves this title more. The story of a Danish pricne who learns from his fathers ghost that his father, the king, was murdered by his brother, Hamlet's uncle, who then went on to marry Hamlet's mother. Hamlet is overcome by a longing for revenge, but also indecisive. Shakespeare creates a great amount of tension between the chatacters with powerful confrontatoins and biting language. It is a suspenseful tragedy, filled with anguish. William Shakespeare was a genious when it came to breaking down the human psyche, and Hamlet is perhaps one of the most complex plays when it comes to human emotions. It is undoubtably one of his finest works, full of very complex, interesting characters, and a wonderfully chaotic plot. There are innumerable theories on Hamlet, why he is so indecisive, and if it all comes down to an oedipus complex. whatever way you interpret it, everyone can get something out of it. I feel like I am priveleged to have read such a wonderful play.. Gently read /edge rubs/tight Clean Pgs. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. more information
