During WWII he served with the RAF, flying in "the battle against U-boats in the Atlantic, the defence of Malta, the protection of the D-Day landings and then attacked U-boat pens in the Skaggerak and Kattegat and defended the Arctic convoys." <BR> He later served as a test pilot with Coastal Command. Refusing permanent commission, he joined BOAC (now British Airways). He also began writing at this time. His writing resulted in 24 novels and five non-fiction books, with his novels translated all over the world, and two made into films. One of the first pilots to be shot down in the Battle of Britain, he was trapped in the blazing cockpit of his machine but managed to struggle free and bale out before being rescued. Much surgery and recovery followed, during which he wrote <B><u>The Last Enemy</b></u> and following which he "badgered" the brass until they allowed him to fly again. <P> Laid in is the spine and rear panel of the dust jacket for <B><u>The Last Enemy</b></u> and a magazine article, "Richard Hillary by Philip Oakes". <P> Covers (brown cloth with gilt titles to spine) are sun-faded and lightly edgeworn. He sees the French pilot, Raymonde LaFrenier, climb out onto the wing to escape the flames, and the German pilot shoot him in the face from point-blank range. Chamay swears revenge because the dead Frenchman was a longtime friend of his. <P> Ernest Kellogg Gann (1910 - 1991) was an aviator, author, filmmaker, sailor, fisherman and conservationist, though best known as a skilled aviator. He flew everything from World War I aircraft to the U-2 and F-15, and brought his deep love of flight to the written page and silver screen, perhaps the b3est example being (later movie), his 1952 best-seller, "The High and the Mighty". <P> Having studied at the Yale School of Drama, he moved to New York where he worked at Radio City Music Hall and as a commercial movie cartoonist, a stunt pilot, and barnstormer. When The Great Depression ended his career in motion pictures, he took his family to California where he worked odd jobs at Burbank Airport, and began to write short stories, but soon returned to New York, and, in 1938, began flying again. Captain Gann flew for American Airlines. London: Macdonald & Co Ltd. 214pp - Undated, but apparently 1945. Leslie (1921-?2000) dedicated this WWII bestseller, his first novel, to his "brother, John, a Prisoner of War" (John Norman Ide, later Sir John). An eccentric (a title he apparently cherished), he was at various times in his life, an RAF pilot, author, composer, film-maker, nightclub director, estate manager and spiritualist. Importantly, he was one of the first proponents of flying saucers and UFOs, and co-wrote with George Adamaski the bestselling <B><u> Flying Saucers Have Landed, </B></u> (1953) which was translated into more than 50 languages. <P> He was also a pioneer of electronic music, setting a dozen Shakespeare plays to music. Some of his other works included <B><U> How Britain Won the Space Race, </B></U> (1966), <B><U> The Jesus File, </B></U> (1975) and <B><U> Pardon My Return </B></U> (1946). <P> Covers (blue cloth with black titles to spine) are worn with bumped corners. London: Duckworth, 1929. 213pp inc b&w frontis portrait of the author and 8 other b &w plates - The author was a member of No. 45 Squadron on the Western front flying Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters. He served throughout much of WWI, and was credited with eleven victories. <BR>Later, he was on Major W.T. Blake's round-the-world flight on May 24, 1922 departing from Croydon, England. Macmillan was the pilot with Blake handling co-pilot and navigator responsibilities. Macmillan suffered a hard landing at Marseilles, France and Blake decided to replace their plane with another DH-9 shuttled to them from England. Blake, Macmillan and Malins continued on through Europe, but the trip was beset by many further problems which caused them to scuttle the round-the-world flight attempt on August 25, 1922, according to the wingnet dot org website. <BR> <B>Provenance</b> this book comes from the library of the late Ian de Hamel, who died in 2003.
