English country churches

Promotional Reprint Company, 1995. Reprint of 1989 Complete Editions edition. Paper covers. V.g. /No Jacket. Winchester Cathedral 1079-1979
Paul Cave, 1979. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket. V.g/V.g. Slight edge wear to jacket, price clipped, bottom edge of front cover bumped, otherwise near fine. Once the largest church in the world this is possibly still the most interesting English cathedral, not least for its turlough in the crypt. With decorative carvings ranging from the sublime (quire stalls) to the ridiculous (a memorial to the diver who repaired the foundations) the building has much to offer its visitors. Sadly this noncentenary account, by the canon residentiary, is somewhat pedestrian, unless you are easily enthralled by episcopal portraits. Appendices list the Bishops, Priors, Deans, Prebendaries and Canons, not forgetting the Cathedral Organists. Notes to each chapter, but no other bibliography. (16), 252 pp. more information

Lancashire's architectural heritage: an anthology of fine buildings

Lancashire County Council Planning Department, 1989. 1st paperback edition. Paper covers. V.g. /No Jacket. A well-illustrated guide to the most distinguished buildings and structures (viz. Blackpool Tower) in the modern shire county of Lancashire, thus excluding Liverpool and Manchester. Ironically, the rear cover shows Gawthorpe Hall viewed from the sundial; sadly only the base now remained at my last visit, which virtually sums up the report (few if any mentions of 'buildings at risk', such as Extwistle Hall). Amusing chapter headings, e.g. 'the battle of the styles'. (7), 168 pp. more information

The National Trust, 2001. Revised edition, first published in 1997. Paper covers. New /No Jacket. A guide to one of the best preserved early 17th century houses in Oxfordshire. The former owners of the estate included Robert Catesby (mastermind of the Gunpowder Plot), and the present house was built by a rich woollen merchant from Witney, Walter Jones. More recent owners included the Clutton-Brocks. The plaster work is remarkable, particularly in the Great Chamber (almost out-doing that of Astley Hall) and the Long Gallery, one of the most dramatic Jacobean spaces in England. 64 pp., plans on end-papers. more information

Cheshire country houses
Phillimore, Chichester, 1988. English Country House series. Fine /Fine. Hard covers, dust jacket Nearly new (faint tanning to page edges); price clipped. The definitive account of country houses in Cheshire, written by the former Keeper of the Walker art gallery, Liverpool (then working in Manchester) in conjunction with one of English Heritage's senior staff in the region, formerly conservation officer in Macclesfield. Contrasting houses grace the dust jacket: the new Ferranti mansion, Henbury Hall, on the front and Little Moreton Hall at the rear. Although Cheshire is placed by the government in England's north-west region, its grand houses have more in common with those of the west midlands, as the wealth which built many of them came from manufacturing and trade rather than agriculture. The gentle topography limits the scope for fine vistas, though occasionally (as at Tirley Garth) there is an inspired choice of site. In addition to the main treatments, there is a gazetteer of lesser houses and useful reference notes. xviii, 294 pp. more information

Britain's best Museums and Galleries
Penguin: Allen Lane, 2004. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket. As new/As new. Nearly new. A personal selection of some of Britain's finest and most interesting museums and art galleries. The author was formerly Minister for the Arts and has a keen eye for the collections, not allowing himself to be distracted by the architecture alone. In selecting his best 350 he has taken care to include some of the smallest, as well as the more obvious ones. His grading system of stars, a la Michelin, seems quite fair overall, though he does tend to give fine art establishments higher ratings than (say) industrial history ones. The author is a Hon. Fellow of the RIBA and the RCA; he deserves something similar from the Museums Association for creating this stimulating and potentially long-selling addition to the museum literature. xxxi, 841 pp., numerous illustrations, maps of the regions into which the book is divided. more information
