Bradley, Richard; with an introduction by Gordon Rowley

The Gregg Press Ltd, 1964. 1st edition thus. Hard covers, no dust jacket. V.g. /No Jacket. Pages sl. tanned at edges. Includes loosely inserted 24-page photocopy (headed in Rowley's distinctive typewriter font) of Caroline Davidson's introduction to the Prospect Books reprint edition of Bradley's "Country Housewife" (1980). Rowley's introduction not only sets Bradley's pioneering work on applied botany into context, with a short bibliography, but also collates and re-identifies the plants illustrated in the Historia Plantarum Succulentarum (1716-27). The 'flier' for this work, published in 1710, is also included, though the facsimile here is of lower quality. The book bears only the original pagination. Ewart, Neil, illustrated by Nina O'Connell

The lore of flowers
Blandford Press, Poole, 1982. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket. V.g/V.g. P. 122 fingermarked (coincidentally this page is on Nasturtium, and includes a rather fanciful cliff view with a galleon (?) in full sail: presumably this is what the blurb refers to as "delightful paintings of flowers, many in idyllic settings"); donor's signature and greeting (1986) on first recto, v.g. The line drawings are if anything even more quirky than the colour plates; Valerian (p. 160) has a Pied Piper, as his secret rat-attractant was apparently a piece of Valerian hidden in his pocket. For readers wishing to avoid the more pedantic ethnobotany books, this one is a treat. more information
