Chronica Botanica (offprint), 1947. Vol. 11, no. 2. Paper covers. V.g/No Jacket. V.g.; owner's initials on cover. Despite the Latin title, this work includes a preface in English, bibliographic citations dealing with the history of Russian botany (those in Russian being transliterated) with brief analyses, and a very useful subject index. Also noteworthy is the plate occupying the centrefold, showing an 1898 plan of the Imperial Botanic Garden, St. Petersburg (which now houses the Komarov Botanical Institute). Rare. more information

3) Double Fold: libraries and the assault on paper
Baker, Nicholson

Random House, New York, 2001. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket. Fine /Fine. A polemical critique of the trend towards electronic or photographic "preservation" of library materials, perhaps not entirely disinterested since the author recently purchased voluminous newspaper archives on his own behalf in order to "rescue" them. Should be compulsory reading for trainee librarians. xii, 370, (1) pp., 4 pp. of colour plates. more information

7) Portico Library: a history
Brooks, Ann & Haworth, Bryan

Portico Library: a history
Carnegie Publishing, Lancaster, 2000. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket in protective plastic sleeve. As new/Fine. Nearly new, with dust jacket and published in Lancaster (not Preston). Signed by the second author. The Portico Library is one of Manchester's most historic cultural institutions, founded in 1806 in a neoclassical building designed by the distinguished architect Thomas Harrison. Today, the ground floor has sadly been turned into a pub, but the book stacks remain proudly on the first floor gallery. An early subscription library, many of the Portico's books have seen better days, Manchester's heavily polluted atmosphere in the 19th century having devoured the leather bindings; and unlike the Liverpool Athenaeum, which has both a fine library and dining facilities, the books take centre stage. Definitely a book for the bibliophile. more information

9) An account of the herbaria of the Department of Botany in the University of Oxford
Clokie, Hermia Newman

An account of the herbaria of the Department of Botany in the University of Oxford
Oxford University Press, 1964. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket. V.g/Good . V.g., former owner's inscription, jacket chipped at bottom edge, faded at spine, but no shelf wear. An invaluable guide to the historic and modern collections of dried plant specimens in the UK's oldest institutional herbarium. More than a simple enumeration, this work provides chapters on the makers of the herbaria (foundation donors), special collections (Bobart, Sherard, Dillenius, Dampier, Bartram) and an account of the more recent history including the addition of the Fielding collection. The second part of the book is an alphabetical index to collectors with particulars of where, when and what they collected. Since these include many non-British collectors, this is a useful adjunct to Desmond's "Dictionary". The book concludes with a selection of handwriting samples. viii, 280 pp., 12 plates. more information

10) Catalogue of the art library bequeathed by Hugh Frederick Hornby Esq., of Liverpool to the Free Public Library of the City of Liverpool
Curran, Henry E. & Robertson, Charles

Catalogue of the art library bequeathed by Hugh Frederick Hornby Esq., of Liverpool to the Free Public Library of the City of Liverpool
Liverpool Library, Museum and Arts Committee, 1906. 1st edition. Library buckram. V.g. /No Jacket. Rebound in red buckram with gilt title on spine, internally a very good unmarked copy. With a short introduction by Peter Cowell, Chief Librarian, summarising the generous gift of a fine library in the will of Hugh Frederick Hornby of Wavertree, along with the sizeable sum of £10,000 to "assist the authorities to provide a building in which to store the collection" - a job they did with aplomb. Whether Hornby would have approved of the use of this space for receptions and openings is an interesting question. His library comprised some 8,000 volumes, mostly chosen "to illustrate the history and progress of the graphic arts from early times to the present". It also contains a complete set of the works issued by the Kelmscott Press. There is also a range of fine bindings, though this catalogue does not cover prints, autographs and art bindings. 12) A bibliography of cookery books published in Britain 1875-1914
Driver, Elizabeth

A bibliography of cookery books published in Britain 1875-1914
Prospect Books, 1989. 1st edition. Hard covers (white cloth), dust jacket. V.g. /Good. The half-title "Cookery and Household Books Published in Britain 1800-1914, Volume Two: Cookery Books Published in Britain 1875-1914" is somewhat misleading, as there is as yet no Volume One covering the period between Elizabeth Maclean's 18th century short-title catalogue and the present work. Arranged by author (if named) and title (if anonymous), then by title and edition, the bibliographic citation is followed by a list of UK and US libraries which hold the book, and a note with points of significance. Occasionally, as for example the entries for Mrs Isabella Beeton and Charles Senn, there is an introductory biographical note which in her case runs to two pages. 748 pp. more information

17) Audubon's elephant
Hart-Davis, Duff

Audubon's elephant
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2003. Hard covers, dust jacket. As new / As new . Describes the trials and tribulations of an ornithologist in early 19th century America, who made several trips to Europe in pursuit of his dream: a double elephant folio book (hence the title) illustrating the birds of North America at life size. Today only around 120 copies have survived intact, and they fetch telephone number prices on the rare occasions when one comes up for sale. A little-known aspect of the work is its attention to habitat detail; plant associates of the birds are well illustrated, and often captioned. Audubon was fortunate, after a false start in Edinburgh, to engage the services of a superbly skilled illustrator and printer, Robert Havell jnr. and a talented editor/copywriter, William McGillivray. Hart-Davis's book, as befits one on this subject, is illustrated with a number of well-chosen colour plates and includes a more than averagely affectionate portrait of C19 Liverpool. 288 pp. End papers decorated with Audubon's plate of the long-billed curlew. more information

Pitman Publishing, 1974. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket. V.g/V.g. The inside story of the bookselling business in the pre-internet era, detailing the quaint practices such as the Net Book Agreement which governed the trade. His chapter on second-hand bookselling is calculated to deter all but the most intrepid from embarking on an activity which he, a former manager of Hatchards, clearly feels is mildly distasteful except for what he terms the "high-class" end of the trade. x, 246 pp. more information

Facsimile of computer database output, arranged alphabetically, listing virtually all known botanical periodicals with both standardised and variant titles. A bibliographic masterpiece, and one of the key reference works for plant taxonomists and botany librarians. This book also contains a number of more general titles, even including publications of the Quekett Microscopical Club. There is no index, but Appendix 1 contains a list of words and abbreviations with their often varied expanded equivalents. There is also a fascinating 'Political Chronology' (Appendix 2) giving details of places of publication (in English) and their historical variants. The book concludes with the wise epitaph by Alexander Pope: "Whoever thinks a faultless piece to see, Thinks what ne'er was, nor is, nor ne'er will be." 1063 pp. As this is a heavy book, please ask for a transport quotation when ordering. more information

34) A catalogue of the library at Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire: the property of the National Trust
Pargeter, Shirley

A catalogue of the library at Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire: the property of the National Trust
Cheshire Libraries & Museums, 1977. Green plasticated hard cover, no d.w. As new/No Jacket. Nearly new. Compiled by Shirley Pargeter of Warrington Library, then one of the constituent libraries of the Cheshire County Library service, this pioneering example of a modern catalogue of a National Trust mansion's library sets a high descriptive standard, though the book is somewhat let down by an absence of any form of subject index and the entries are not individually numbered. Anonymous tracts are entered twice where the author is inferred, once under the author's name and again under the title. The Egertons' tastes predictably embraced the classic 17th and 18th century works on art and antiquities, supplemented by a wide coverage of English literature. Although works by members of the Tatton branch of the Egerton family are well represented, there is nothing (say) on geology by Sir Philip de Malpas Grey-Egerton of Oulton Park, and natural history is inconspicuous. There is a small but interesting music library. The introduction, by E.J. Miller (the Trust's libraries adviser) makes the valid point that libraries of this type are not merely collections of books, but reflect the cultural background and social status of the family's members; books being more personal than artefacts tend to highlight their whims and enthusiasms through the centuries. more information
