Redkie i ischezayushchie vidy prirodnoi flory SSSR [Rare and disappearing species of the native flora of the USSR]
Nauka, Moskva, 1983. Hard cover, no dust jacket. V.g. / No Jacket. Top of spine bumped, gilt lettering of cover dulled, pages tanned at margins, but a sound copy. This is a precursor to the Red Data Books in that it enumerates 94 botanical gardens of the former USSR and for each rare and declining species it lists the gardens undertaking ex situ cultivation of that plant. Brief details are also provided of the native range of the species, its habitat and life form (annual, biennial, perennial etc.). The wild origin of each accession is tabulated, along with the year of introduction to cultivation. Plants are listed under their scientific (Latin) names in alphabetical order of family, genus and species. A useful contribution to the conservation literature, though no objective assessment of rarity or threat is given and the book lacks a bibliography. Limited edition of 5,950 copies. 304 pp. (more information)
