Shows a fairly small area of coast roughly from Abbotsbury to East Fleet, so quite a lot of sea on this map. With an 'Explanation of Geological Signs and Colours' in margin; plus a 'Section showing the general relations of the rocks along the eastern margin of the map'. Hardback. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall This book has more than 200 half-tone illustrations, most of them from old maps, and a colour frontispiece, 337pp including Bibliographical Note and Index. Its fascinating theme is the mutual influence of maps upon explorers' voyages, and of the voyages upon later maps. It is in fact a pictorial guide to general histories of exploration. But it is far more than a picture book - there are 319 pages of text and illustration combined. The maps used or drawn by explorers describe the borderland between the known and the unknown. The recording of a journey is one of the oldest uses which maps have served, but systematic survey and map or chart-work in connection with voyages of discovery are scarcely found before the 15th century. This is strictly the starting-point of the book, which continues until the close of the 19th century. Beige boards with gilt, very nice and clean, top page edges blue. Dust-jacket has some foxing spots mainly to the inside, some rubbing and slight staining to extremities, red lettering on spine is partly faded. Some chipping to corners of dust-jacket and a section missing from top of spine - all repaired with archival tape; jacket is in loose protective cover. Overall a nice copy in Very Good+ condition in a Good dust-jacket. . more information
