Moorehead starts his epic story in 1856, when Burton and Speke vanished from human ken for 2 years. He finishes it in 1900. Between these dates we read of thrilling struggles against hostile tribes, disease, exhaustion and famine, meet a wide variety of picturesque native rulers, and see the slave trade in all its horror.
