Everest - The Unclimbed Ridge
Hodder & Stoughton. Near Fine/Fine. 1983. First Edition. Hardback. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall 0340332387 Profusely illustrated with colour and black-and-white photographs, as well as maps. 132pp including Epilogue; obituries for Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker; Diary of Events; Select Bibliography; and Index. In 1982, a small British team of 6 set out for Everest's last unclimbed ridge from Tibet without oxygen. They knew its dangers, but like their predecessors pried their way into that icy world of wind and snow. Whilst we shall never know the last tragic moments of the 1982 British Everest Expeditions's final assault, this book records the team's progress to the once Forbidden City of Lhasa, across Tibet and to the unknown North East Ridge. It is the personal story of Bonington, the leader, and Clarke the expedition doctor; redolent in climbing history, it tells of a close-knit team who lost cherished friends. Honest and sometimes stark in its imagery, it lends a glimpse, through the eyes of the team's survivors, of the enigma of why anyone should leave home for the Goddess Mother of the World. End paper maps. Dust-jacket has the slightest evidence of yellowing to spine and is in loose protective cover. Small black ink mark to top page edges which shows slightly at the top of a few pages when open. Overall a nice copy in Near Fine condition in a Fine dust-jacket. . more information
