3) Gentlemen of Fortune - The Men Who Made Their Fortunes in Britain's Slave Colonies
Knight, Derrick

Gentlemen of Fortune - The Men Who Made Their Fortunes in Britain's Slave Colonies
London: Frederick Muller. Very Good++/Very Good+. 1978. First Edition. Hardback. 0584101651 With some very interesting illustrations, 135pp including Bibliography and Index. Colonists who went to the West Indies were fortune hunters - adventurers looking for quick ways of making their fortunes and getting it home to Britain with as little leakage to the King's enemies or the King's taxmen as possible. In the mid 18th century, the Gentlemen of Fortune came home in large numbers with their profits, and created a West India interest in Britain, able to buy its way into the landed gentry, mount a powerful pressure group in the House of Commons, which at different times was able to sway the commercial policies of the British Empire, and hold back the abolition of slavery for several decades. The author contends in this book that these Gentlemen of Fortune were of major importance in the creation of modern Britain and suggests some of the lasting effects of their ambitions and activities. 5) An Investigation into Modern-Day Slavery: Enslaved
Thomas, Gordon

An Investigation into Modern-Day Slavery: Enslaved
Bantam Press. Fine/Near Fine. 1990. First Edition. Hardback. 0593016882 Photographic illustrations. 257pp including Bibliography and Index. Slavery flourishes today as never before. The Anti-Slavery Society, the oldest of all human rights organisations, estimates that there are now some 200 million men, women and children who can be classified as slaves. This book presents the full horror and enormity of modern-day slavery. While this unique record casts a deeply shameful shadow over our so-called civilisation, it also carries a message of hope. For in essence it is the inspiring story of a heroic band of people who risk their lives daily as they battle against the global network that trafficks in humans. A compelling read. Dust-jacket has very minor rubbing to some corners and top/bottom of spine - reinforced in places with archival tape; jacket is in loose protective cover. A clean and Fine copy in a Near Fine dust-jacket. . more information
