2) Karagšz: Turkish shadow theatre
And, Metin

Karagšz: Turkish shadow theatre
Dost, 1977. Paper covers. V.g. /No Jacket. Originally published by Dost Yayinlari in 1977, this English translation is aimed principally at students of drama as well as the wider public. The author was Professor of Dramatic Art at the University of Ankara and an expert on Byzantine drama. Turkish shadow puppetry is an ancient art performed by travelling players using projected images, music and speech, with a cast of traditional characters. The two main protagonists are Hacivat (pronounced 'Hadjivat') and Karagšz. Animals as well as humans are represented (avoiding one of the trickiest issues for live theatre) and each character has satirical characteristics which the audience can instantly recognise: for example, Bebe Ruhi (who looks a bit like Mr Punch) has a speech impediment. Some ethnologists believe that the tradition was carried via India from Java; others believe it is autochthonous. The book is in v.g. condition with some abrasion of the covers at edges and slight transfer of ink from the folded-over covers to the end papers. It contains 85 colour illustrations and 49 in monochrome. more information
