33) The genus Epilobium (Onagraceae) in Australasia: a systematic and evolutionary study
Raven, Peter H. & Raven, Tamra Engelhorn

The genus Epilobium (Onagraceae) in Australasia: a systematic and evolutionary study
New Zealand DSIR, Christchurch, 1976. Bulletin 216. Hard covers printed with title, no dust jacket. V.g/No Jacket. Owner's signature inside front cover; sl. abrasion to covers, otherwise v.g. A most impressive regional monograph by a young American botanist who went on to become Director of Missouri Botanic Garden and an adviser to President Clinton. Probably the only floristic work to contain a map of a balloon tracked around eight circuits of the southern hemisphere (fig. 26). He poses the question, "why should there be so many species of Epilobium in New Zealand"? The answer lies in the Pleistocene, when plant migrations caused by the Ice Ages caused mixing of populations, hybridisation and subsequent selection of plants adapted to different microhabitats. Includes keys, descriptions, dot distribution maps, citation of specimens, and some very attractive text figures illustrating critical features as well as a few rather less successful colour plates of whole plants and dissections. The term 'Australasia' is applied rather loosely, to include plants of New Guinea as well as Australia and New Zealand. more information

Hubbard, former Kew agrostologist) inside cover, and inscription "Wits [sic] compliments of author" on first page of main text of vol. 1. The first volume contains the original monograph of the genus Aegilops by Professor P.M. Zhukovsky, one of Vavilov's closest associates and author of "Agriculture of Turkey". It includes a section (pp. 556 - 583) on the "Geographical characteristics of the sections and species of the genus Aegilops L." It was published, in Russian but with a substantial English summary (pp. 584-609), in "Bulletin of Applied Botany, of Genetics and Plant Breeding" vol. 18 no. 1 (1927-28). The second volume is a reprint of A. Eig's "Monographisch -Kritische Uebersicht der Gattung Aegilops" from Feddes Repertorium, Beihefte Band 55 (1929) which consists of "a critical systematic survey of the species of the genus Aegilops L. by P.M. Zhukovsky", in German. In this latter work Eig amplifies Zhukovsky's treatment and describes some new species. The title page states that it has been translated from Hebrew. The two monographs, taken together, are of critical importance for our understanding of the genus Aegilops, which provided one of the ancestors of the bread-wheat and is a group of grasses that is widely distributed in south-west and central Asia. more information
