ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY BOTANICAL WATERCOLOR OF PEONIES
British Isles: c. 1810. Matted in Ivory rag board, sized to 14 x 14 inches. Fine condition A rare original early nineteenth century watercolor painting of a bouquet of Peonies. painted in a primitive folk style on paper. (8.5 x 6.5 inches, 215 x 165 mm). The mounted painting has been tipped onto ecru board of the period, yet the colors remain vibrant and rich. Although the artist of this lovely study remains unknown, her technique and refined skill at handling this challenging medium is evident. An exacting eye and subtle use of color were the hallmarks of a trained student, yet during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the art of botanical painting was an essential and favored skill for all well-bred gentlewomen. Clearly painted by an impassioned hand. This original study was created with considerable skill and attention to refined detailing and coloration. more information

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1818, 1818. Cloth First edition Very Good + condition. Top edge of spine slightly pulled. Corners slightly bumped. Minor staining to cover. Quarto Edition (9.5 x 11.5 in .) Original blue-green ribbed publisher's cloth. Gilt title. [i-ii],[title], 1-36, Pp. 9-16 hand-colored tint samples, representing the color spectrum, plus 12 finely hand-colored stipple engravings, (4 leaves, 8 flowers) and their corresponding 'lesson' pages, printed in blue-green ink. Watermarked paper. The lesson pages have been attempted by a primitive hand, in various medium: watercolor, conte crayon. Two additional studies, one flower, one branch of leaves. Slight soiling to a few plates. George Brookshaw, most noted for his excellent pomological engravings in both Folio and Quarto editions of Pomona Britannica, also excelled at the refined art of decorative painting on cabinetry. His floral sprays and cornucopias graced furniture, often commissioned by 18th Century British Royalty. The furniture was produced under the pseudonym, G. Brown. The name change was a result of Brookshaw's alleged scandalous actions, not uncommon to the period. Nonetheless, this scarce work displays his refined floral skill. "A delightful book, typical of the age when drawing in watercolours was fashionable". Dunthorne 52, Henry p. 596-97. more information

Octavo (6.5 x 9.75 inch, 165 x 248 mm)During the 19th Century, in recognition of both the growing interest in horticulture throughout Europe and the grand discoveries of the plant hunters worldwide, several botanical periodicals were published to document, and through the lavish hand-finished engravings and lithographs, extol the beauty of these botanical treasures from around the globe. Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe, Ghent 1845-1888, edited by Charles Lemaire and Louis Van Houtte (1810-1876), was one of the finest Horticulture journals produced in Europe during that time.
