Born to a wealthy and orthodox Brahmin family of Calcutta in 1865, he later became a disciple of the great Bengali saint and mystic, Sri Ramakrishna, a distinguished visitor to the United States, a noted writer and teacher, and, ultimately, Secretary of the extensive religious and missionary order named after Sri Ramakrishna.</p>This is no ordinary biography; Saradananda was an amazing combination of spirituality, patience, devotion, and effectiveness in dealing with the exigencies of a large organization. When flood, famine, and epidemic wreaked havoc in the countryside, Saradananda was there to help; when financial problems plagued the organization he had pledged his life to support, he turned writer to earn the necessary funds to continue. His is a story of close contact with political leaders, great saints, numerous religious leaders throughout the world, great teachers, noted authors, and outrageous eccentrics. In adition to the fullness of his own activities, two major themes ran through Saradananda's life and are reflected in this book: his selfless devotion to Sri Sarada Devi the saintly, venerated wife of Sri Ramakrishna, and his closeness to his brother monks. more information
