Text in French (translated into French from the author's original English manuscript by Anne Paillard, but first published in French in 1962; an edited English edition was not published until 1989). Winner of the 1963 Alice David Hitchcock award given by the Society of Architectural Historians for the most distinguished work of scholarship in the history of architecture. In this brilliant study of the Saint-Etienne Cathedral of Bourges, France--one of the great architectural monuments of the Middle Ages--the author demonstrates the grand cathedral's importance to the development of High Gothic architecture from 1195 to the middle of the 13th century. This well-illustrated pamphlet presents a brief history of the beautiful and imposing Bibi Khanum Mosque located in Samarqand, Uzbekistan. Although now partly in ruins, the mosque was built by Timur (Tamerlane) circa 1399-1400 to commemorate his defeat of the Sultanate of Delhi in 1399. Popular tradition also ascribes the construction of the monument to a wife of Timur, Bibi Khanum. There are two plates of miniature paintings and several color photographs with views of the ruined monument under restoration. Mild sunning along very edge of spine, with very light overall rubbing..
