AESTHETICS AND POLITICS OF THE HOLOCAUST FILM
Bloomington, IN, 1983. Chapter endnotes, bibliography, filmography. This is a final copy of the author's PhD dissertation (Bloomington, Indiana University) as presented to members of the PhD committee. "The aim of this study is to examine how cinematic art meets the crucial challenge of dealing with the extraordinary nature of the Holocaust, focusing on the adequacy of the medium to record, transmit, convey, interpret, and evaluate the historical event. Through a detailed analysis of selected works representing serious attempts to deal with the subject on the screen, [the author] shall highlight cinema's specific potentialities, strengths, limitations, and the variety of stylistic strategies and thematic concerns displayed by the most significant Holocaust films." The Czech cinema: Stylistic approaches to the representation of the Holocaust on the screen. The discontents of cinematic narrative. The Hollywood film and the presentation of the Jewish catastrophe.
