Merlin or the Early History of King Arthur; a Prose Romance (about 1450-1460 AD) with an Introduction Containing Outlines of the History of the Legend of Merlin By William Edward Mead............ (4 Parts ? in 3 VOLUMES = COMPLETE SET)

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1899. Cloth Bound Boards. ....ALSO 'Essays on Merlin the Enchanter and Merlin the Bard', by D W Nash, FSA; and 'Arthurian Localities' by J S Stuart Glennie. Edited from the Unique Ms. In the University Library, Cambridge. Bright Brick coloured cloth boards, with bright gilt titling to spines, no marks to covers - all Uniformly bound in a plain but quite handsome Ex Library rebind. Very clean, tight and with sharp corners and unbuckled spines. An Ex Ref library book plate to each front pastedown, and the odd small purple library stamp - but very few - and could be removed. All edges Marbled. All Hinges Secure. Internally a few light marks but mainly to the volume containing 'Parts 1 and 2'. Also some light uniform 'browning', but overall all 3 Volumes are in Excellent condition. In the 'Early English Text' Series. The pagination/volumes/parts are horribly tricky in this set - and obviously was odd even in the original issues - but this set has been bound up not exactly according to the 'Contents' list, but it is all there and Complete. Looking at other listings it does look as tho' these parts may have been issued NOT according to the Title pages/'Contents' list originally , and as one states that there was a " NOTICE. The complete work will be too large to bind in one volume, and therefore the title-pages for the two volumes are herewith provided." The collation of this set is as follows:- VOL ONE 1899. The Full Title Page states 'Vol 1' and someone has crossed out the 1 in biro. (However this volume appears to be actually PART 4 as the next volume states Part 1 and 2). Contents = 'Preface', 'Introduction', 'Bibliography', 'The Story of Merlin', 'Various Forms of the Merlin Legend', 'The Development of the Early Forms of the Legend', 'The Transistion to French Literature', 'The French Mss of the prose Merlin', 'Two Merlins or One', 'Notes on the sources', 'The Literary Value of the Merlin', 'The English Mss. of the Merlin, 'Additional Notes', 'Index to Outlines of the History of the Legend of Merlin', 'Collation of the printed Merlin of the E.E.T.S. with the Ms.in the University Library, Cambridge', 'Index', 'Glossary'. VOL ONE & TWO - BUT - Title page states 'Vol 11' - again crossed out in biro and biro figures inserted to read 'I + II'. So this volume is actually 'PARTS 1 & 2'. Contents = 'Merlin the Enchanter and Merlin the Bard'...... An Essay by D.W. Nash, Author of "Taliesin". 'The Romance of Merlin' .... .Chapters 1- 21. 1 - 378 pp (of 701pp.) . PART III - no title, just a half title stating 'Merlin Part III'. Contents = 'Arthurian Localities: Their Historical Origin, Chief Country, and Fingalian Relations'. With a Fold out coloured Map - 'The North in the 6th Century or Arthurian Scotland to illustrate Mr. Stuart Glennie's Journeyings'....... By J.S. Stuart Glennie, 'The Romance of Merlin' Chapters 22 to 33. 380 - 701pp. The 'Advertisement' after the half title states that ..... "With the present Part this Romance is finished, and the Adventures of Merlin brought to a Conclusion. The Unique Manuscript from which it is printed is imperfect at the end, but it has been completed by a translation from the original French MS. in the Library of the British Museum (Add. MS., No. 10292), for which I am indebted to Mr Furnivall. The Titles, Preface, Glossery and Index will form a Fourth part, and will appear in the course of the present year. (1869....this was to the original edition) So ............................ looking at all that, and at the 'Advertisement' (from the first edition of 1869 ("The Titles, Preface, Glossery and Index will form a FOURTH PART, and will appear in the course of the present year. ") - as this (plus more) is actually what the volume with the Title page 'VOL ONE' is comprised of, it would appear that this is COMPLETE in the 4 parts, but bound into 3 VOLUMES - with the 4th part being the volume without a 'Part' ascribed to it on the spine.?? Can anyone tell me different? This is a nightmare to collate, but I'm fairly certain the set is a complete one.; 004007; Ex-Reference Lib - Minimal Mks; 8vo . more information
